Balraj Landa Embraces New Challenge in Hong Kong Premier League

Balraj Landa has traded the fringes of the English Premier League for a leap into the unknown in Hong Kong – and he sounds ready to embrace every bit of it.

Released by AFC Bournemouth in February, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has signed for Southern ahead of the new Hong Kong Premier League campaign, after short spells with non-league sides Salisbury City and Dorchester Town. It is a sharp change of scenery and standard, but exactly the kind of jolt he was looking for.

The move gathered pace once Zesh Rehman, the former Fulham defender and ex-player-manager of Southern, flagged up the opportunity. From there, Landa barely had to think.

“The decision to come was a no-brainer,” he said. “My first thought was, ‘What an opportunity to get’.”

For a player who came through the academy system at Southampton after being spotted at just eight years old, the promise of a fresh stage was crucial. Hong Kong offers that, and more.

“It ticks all the boxes for me: it’s a good platform to show myself in Asia, and to really get my name out there,” Landa explained. “On the non-football side, it’s a chance to live on the other side of the world, to adapt and to survive by myself.”

That last line tells you as much about the move as any scouting report. Landa is not just chasing minutes; he is testing himself far from home, in a new league and a new culture.

On the pitch, Southern are getting a two-footed, “very technical and creative” attacking midfielder, someone shaped by years in elite English academies and hardened by the reality check of non-league football.

Now comes the real examination: whether that blend of polish and grit can carry him from the south coast of England to a starring role in Hong Kong.
