Bajcetic and Ramsay: Liverpool's Midfield and Defense Reshuffle

Liverpool’s midfield reshuffle could claim another high-profile casualty, with Stefan Bajcetic edging towards the Anfield exit and a return “home” to Celta Vigo – if one crucial condition is met.

At the same time, Calvin Ramsay has packed his bags for yet another loan spell, a move that all but closes the book on his Liverpool career.

Bajcetic on brink of permanent Anfield exit

Liverpool plucked Bajcetic from Celta Vigo’s academy in December 2020, paying just £224,000 to bring the then 16-year-old to Merseyside. It looked a smart, long-term investment. It still might be – just not for Liverpool.

Under Jurgen Klopp in 2022/23, the Spain Under-21 midfielder broke through with 19 appearances, showing poise and bite in equal measure. The club responded with a new long-term contract, a clear signal they saw him as part of the next Liverpool midfield era.

Then the injuries arrived. Not one major collapse, but a drip-feed of niggles that stalled his momentum and slowly pushed him to the fringes.

Last season, Liverpool sent him out twice – first to Red Bull Salzburg, then to Las Palmas – in a bid to reboot his development. He has not played a competitive game for Liverpool since May 2024. For a 21-year-old once tipped as a key piece of the future, that statistic is stark.

Now comes the twist.

According to Faro de Vigo, Bajcetic has emerged as a priority target for Celta Vigo, the club he left six years ago. Talks have already taken place over a return, with the Spanish outlet claiming he is “closer than ever to returning home” and that Celta “wants him back”.

The catch is significant. Celta need Liverpool to terminate the final year of his contract to make the deal happen. No fee, no negotiation over a transfer sum – a clean break, with Liverpool ripping up the remaining year.

Liverpool are understood to be weighing it up. The club know they are unlikely to command a meaningful fee in the current circumstances and could instead look to protect themselves by inserting a sell-on clause into any agreement, banking on Bajcetic’s talent eventually paying them back from afar.

If they go down that route, a player once seen as a long-term Anfield midfielder would leave without adding to his appearance tally since that spring afternoon in 2024. His Liverpool story could end not with a farewell cameo, but with a contract termination and a quiet return to Galicia.

Ramsay heads to St Mirren as Anfield door closes

On the opposite flank, another Liverpool project has reached its final chapter.

Calvin Ramsay arrived from Aberdeen in June 2022 for £4.2m, signed to push and protect Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. It never happened.

The Scotland international, capped once by his country, managed just four senior appearances for Liverpool. Injuries, competition and inconsistency all played their part, but the end result is brutal: he never convinced anyone he could reach the level required to anchor that side of Liverpool’s defence.

Loan spells followed in quick succession – Preston, Bolton, Wigan and, last season, Kilmarnock. Across all four clubs, he totalled only 26 appearances. The most stable run came at Wigan Athletic, where he played 12 times in the 2024/25 campaign.

Now, with Andoni Iraola trimming the squad and cutting loose those on the fringes, Liverpool have confirmed Ramsay’s latest move: a season-long loan to St Mirren.

He is 21 and in the final year of his Liverpool contract. There is no option to buy included in the deal, but the implications are clear. This is effectively the end of his Liverpool career, whether that is spelled out in a statement or not.

For St Mirren, it is a low-risk chance to revive a once-bright prospect. For Ramsay, it is likely a last audition – not for Liverpool, but for the rest of the market. If he can string games together in Paisley and show the form that earned him that £4.2m switch from Aberdeen, doors will open again.

Liverpool, meanwhile, move on. One young defender out on what looks like a farewell tour, and one gifted midfielder waiting to see if the club will cut him loose so he can go back to where it all began.

If Bajcetic does walk away and Ramsay never returns, it will be another reminder of how ruthless the margins are at the top. Talent gets you in the building. Staying there is another fight entirely.
