Atlético Madrid's Bold Response to Barcelona Amid Julián Álvarez Speculation

Atlético Madrid didn’t just respond to Barcelona on Thursday. They went on the offensive.

What began as a swirl of speculation over Barça’s interest in Julián Álvarez turned into a full-blown digital skirmish, with Atlético using their official X account to mock the Catalan club and, in the process, lay bare a deeper resentment that has clearly been simmering for some time.

First came the posts. Los Colchoneros jokingly “announced” their own supposed moves for Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha and even Deco, turning the transfer rumour mill on its head. Then they pushed it further with a surreal video involving a dog in a lion’s wig – a not-so-subtle jab at the theatre surrounding Barcelona’s pursuit of Álvarez.

It looked like banter. It wasn’t.

An Atlético source, speaking to Mundo Deportivo, cut through the irony and explained the fury behind the jokes.

“It might seem like a joke or a bit humorous, but this is very serious. We’ve been very angry with FC Barcelona for some time now. It was done ironically, to hold a mirror up to the Catalan club and show them what they’re doing,” the source said.

The complaints ran well beyond a few rumours on social media. According to the same source, Atlético feel Barcelona, and those around the club, have been orchestrating a campaign around Álvarez in the media and in public.

“The messages from Fabrizio Romano, those from the press that covers the team—like when Cerezo goes to Barcelona for lunch and they bombard him with impertinent questions about whether he’s going to negotiate with Laporta for Julián—the way they treat our players in the mixed zone…”

The frustration doesn’t stop there. The source accused Barcelona’s environment of staging scenes to feed the narrative.

“They organize a dinner in Barcelona and alert El Chiringuito so they can film it, so Juanma López (a player agent and supposed mediator in this matter) is seen leaving the restaurant.”

From Atlético’s point of view, the line has been crossed. They claim offers have been leaked to the press that never actually arrived at the club’s offices.

“They leak an offer that we claim has been sent, but nothing has arrived here,” the source continued, before delivering the bluntest verdict of all: “It’s over. We’re very angry and this was our way of showing it.”

If there was any doubt about their stance on Álvarez, Atlético smashed that too.

The club have reiterated that the forward is not on the market under normal conditions. No drawn-out payment plans, no cleverly structured deals.

“Julián can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments over several seasons with some variables. It’s a €500 million cash payment that needs to be deposited at LaLiga headquarters.”

Half a billion. Cash. Or nothing.

For now, that’s Atlético’s message to Barcelona and to anyone else circling their star. The jokes have stopped. The price tag has not.
