Atletico Madrid's Anger at Barcelona Over Julián Álvarez Transfer
What looked like a bit of social media mischief from Atletico Madrid was anything but.
The club’s official X account spent the day firing off a string of ironic posts, joking about imaginary transfer offers for Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Raphinha. On the surface, it played like harmless banter. Underneath, it came from a club that feels pushed to the limit by FC Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez.
Those posts were Atletico’s public answer to growing reports that Barça are not only interested in Álvarez, but have already tabled an offer – a claim the Madrid club flatly rejects.
Inside the Metropolitano, the mood is anything but playful.
“It might seem like a joke or a bit of humour, but this is very serious. We’ve been very angry with FC Barcelona for some time now. It was done ironically, to hold a mirror up to the Catalan club, to show them what they’re doing,” club sources told Mundo Deportivo.
“Coordinated campaign” and rising tension
Atletico are convinced there has been a coordinated push around Álvarez’s future. They see a pattern, and they are tired of it.
“The messages from Fabrizio Romano, those from the press that covers the team, like when Cerezo goes to eat in Barcelona and they bombard him with impertinent questions about whether he’s going to negotiate with Laporta for Julian, the way they treat our players in the mixed zone…,” the same sources explained.
The frustration runs beyond headlines and social clips. Atletico believe the entire atmosphere around Álvarez is being engineered from outside the club.
“They organize a dinner in Barcelona and alert El Chiringuito so they can film it, so Juanma López (a player agent and supposed mediator in this matter) is seen leaving the restaurant.
“They leak an offer that we claim has been sent, but nothing has arrived here (at Atletico).”
From their vantage point, this is not transfer-market noise. It is interference.
Inside the club, the accusation is blunt: Barcelona have been “destabilising things for months” around Álvarez. “It’s over. We’re very angry and this was our way of showing it,” the source added, referring back to the sarcastic social media barrage.
A wall called €500 million
Behind the anger, Atletico know they hold a powerful shield: Álvarez’s contract.
The Argentine is tied to the club until 2030 and protected by a €500 million release clause. That figure is not decoration. Atletico are treating it as a line in stone.
“What is clear is that Atletico holds all the cards. The player is protected (€500 million release clause) and has a long-term contract (until 2030),” the same internal voice insisted.
Inside the Metropolitano, the message does not change, whether in corridors or in front of microphones: “Atletico is delighted with him, he has a long-term contract, he’s protected, and we’re counting on him for next season.”
Earlier speculation suggested some kind of compromise might emerge, with talk of a deal in the region of €150 million. That door, as far as Atletico are concerned, is now bolted.
“Julian can’t be signed with a fixed fee, paid in installments over several seasons with some variables. It’s a €500 million cash payment that needs to be deposited at La Liga headquarters,” they stressed.
No negotiation. No structure. No creative accounting. Just the full clause, in cash, or nothing.
Agent under fire, club on the defensive
In the swirl of rumours, Álvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, has also come under scrutiny. Atletico, though, are not pointing the finger at him.
“If Barcelona had done things properly, the agent wouldn’t be involved. But if you’re bypassing the club, then you’re not doing things the right way,” the source said.
That line captures the heart of Atletico’s fury. This is not only about a star forward or a nine-figure clause. It is about what they see as a rival trying to work around them, not with them.
So the jokes on X were not just jokes. They were a warning shot.
Barcelona know the price. Atletico have made it clear they expect the rules to be respected. The next move, if there is one, will show how far Barça are really willing to go for Julián Álvarez – and how far Atletico are ready to go to stop them.
