Aston Villa's Bold Transfers: Mbaye and Harwood-Bellis Join
Aston Villa have launched another bold swing in the transfer market, sealing deals for Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris St-Germain and English centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton.
Mbaye, 18, joins from PSG for 55m euros (£47m), a statement fee for a teenager with just one full senior season behind him. Harwood-Bellis, 24, arrives for an initial £25m, a move that could rise to £29m with add-ons after Villa finally broke Southampton’s resistance at the third attempt.
Villa bet big on Mbaye’s ceiling
This is not a quiet punt on potential. Mbaye’s numbers at PSG last season were modest on paper – three goals and two assists in 31 games across all competitions – but he played his part in a side that retained both the Ligue 1 and Champions League titles.
His real explosion came on the biggest stage. The winger featured in all four of Senegal’s matches at the 2026 World Cup, scoring in a 3-1 defeat by France and, in the process, becoming the youngest African player ever to score at a men’s World Cup. That moment shifted how Europe looked at him.
Born in France, Mbaye came through the Paris system the hard way. PSG picked him up from FC Versailles 78 in the summer of 2018, and he climbed the youth ranks before making his senior debut in August 2024 at just 16. He represented France at youth level, but in 2025 he chose Senegal, qualifying through his father and quickly forcing his way into the national setup.
Now he walks into a Villa attack already reshaped in Emery’s image. Mbaye follows Alejandro Garnacho, Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson through the door, a fresh, rapid front line built for high-tempo, aggressive football.
Harwood-Bellis shores up the back line
At the other end of the pitch, Harwood-Bellis fills a gap that had been looming all summer. Villa saw two bids knocked back before finally agreeing a package with Southampton: £25m up front, with a further £4m tied to performance-related clauses.
The England defender, 24, fits the profile Emery wants – comfortable on the ball, strong in duels, and entering what should be his prime years. With Villa juggling domestic ambitions and European demands, his arrival adds depth as well as a likely starter’s presence.
Rebuild after big-name exits
All of this spending comes with context. The Europa League-winning squad that carried Villa back into Europe has been stripped of some of its core.
