Aston Villa Secure Ibrahim Mbaye from PSG, Outmaneuvering Liverpool
Aston Villa have struck a deal with PSG to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye, beating Liverpool to one of Europe’s most talked-about teenagers.
Liverpool had circled Mbaye as a potential long-term successor to Mohamed Salah and held talks over a move, but walked away when they were quoted €70 million. There was a feeling that PSG’s price could drop, yet the Anfield hierarchy chose not to get dragged into a prolonged negotiation.
Instead, Liverpool threw their efforts into landing top target Bradley Barcola. That decision has opened the door for Villa, who have been lurking in the background for months, to pounce.
Villa’s long chase pays off
Villa’s interest is nothing new. The Midlands club pushed for Mbaye in January, only to be rebuffed when PSG refused to sell mid-season. The situation has shifted sharply since then.
Mbaye, 18, wants regular football. After returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, his minutes at PSG dried up in the second half of the campaign, despite his rapid rise and growing reputation. A player who has already appeared at both AFCON in the winter and the World Cup this summer is not inclined to sit on the bench.
PSG, facing a player eager to move on, have relented.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have now agreed a €55 million fee with the French champions. The deal has been smoothed by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris, a connection that has helped push negotiations over the line.
Mbaye is expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park. The report states that the Senegal international has been on Villa’s list for a long time, viewed internally as a priority target rather than a late-window opportunity.
A teenager with big-stage experience
For an 18-year-old, Mbaye arrives with serious pedigree. He has already made 42 senior appearances for PSG, gaining exposure at the sharp end of European football, while also representing Senegal at major tournaments.
That blend of youth and experience is exactly what Unai Emery has been hunting. The Villa manager wanted another winger to bolster his attacking options and give his side more direct threat in wide areas. Mbaye is expected to play a prominent role rather than be eased in gently.
His desire for a new challenge now meets a club on an upward curve, one that can offer him the minutes PSG could no longer guarantee.
Leao talks stall, Mbaye steps in
Villa had also been in discussions over a move for AC Milan forward Rafael Leao. Those talks dragged on for several days but now look set to end in disappointment for the Premier League side.
Indications are that Leao has chosen Galatasaray as his preferred destination, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal. That setback could have left a sizeable hole in Emery’s attacking plans.
Instead, the agreement for Mbaye has landed at exactly the right moment.
Liverpool turned away. PSG lowered the price. Villa stayed patient.
Now one of Europe’s brightest young wingers is heading for Birmingham, and the question shifts from “who will get him?” to “how high can he push Villa’s ceiling this season?”
