Aston Villa Steals Ibrahim Mbaye from Liverpool in €55m Transfer
Liverpool have spent the summer tracking Ibrahim Mbaye as their Paris Saint-Germain back-up plan. They’ve just watched him walk into Aston Villa’s arms instead.
The 18-year-old Senegalese right-winger, monitored by the Reds for months in case the Bradley Barcola deal collapsed, is now heading to Birmingham in a move that underlines Villa’s new financial muscle and growing ambition.
Villa pounce as Liverpool seal Barcola green light
Liverpool finally received the green light on Thursday for Barcola’s £100 million move to Merseyside, pending a medical. With that, Mbaye — long viewed as the contingency option — effectively came onto the market.
Villa didn’t hesitate.
Flush with cash after cashing in on Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and several other first-team regulars, the Europa League holders stepped in and agreed a €55 million (£47m, $64m) fee with PSG. It’s a transfer that had barely been whispered in connection with Villa all summer, yet now looks like one of the window’s sharpest ambushes.
For Liverpool, it closes off a route they had carefully kept open. If anything goes wrong late in the Barcola process, the safety net has vanished.
Valuation stand-off opens the door
The move comes after a familiar tug-of-war between Liverpool and PSG over valuation. RMC Sport reported last week that the clubs were far apart on Mbaye’s price, just as they had been at various stages of the Barcola talks.
PSG are understood to have rated Mbaye at around £60 million ($82m). Liverpool saw him closer to £43 million ($59m). Villa’s agreed price of €55 million sits much nearer the Anfield assessment than the Paris one — but it’s Villa, not Liverpool, who have found common ground with the French champions.
David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed on Friday that Villa had reached an agreement with PSG. The Midlands club have tracked Mbaye since January, but from the outside looking in, they always appeared to be lurking on the fringes of the race, not leading it. That perception has been ripped up.
From Versailles to the Champions League stage
Mbaye’s rise has been steep and fast.
He joined PSG in 2018 at the age of 10 from FC Versailles 78, the same youth club that once helped shape Thierry Henry before his move to Monaco. From there, Mbaye climbed through the age groups and then broke into Luis Enrique’s first team in 2024, just as PSG were cementing themselves as two-time reigning Champions League winners.
By 16, he had already become the youngest-ever player to start for PSG. Last season he made 39 appearances in all competitions, showcasing the kind of direct, inventive wing play that has alerted Europe’s elite.
On the international stage, he has already made his mark. Mbaye featured as a rotation option for Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, scoring against France in the group stage — a statement moment on the biggest platform of all.
His omission from Enrique’s bench for PSG’s opening Ligue 1 game, amid heavy transfer noise, now looks like the final hint that a move was imminent.
Villa’s radical rebuild gathers pace
Mbaye arrives at Villa Park as part of a sweeping overhaul following their 2026 Europa League triumph. The squad that lifted that trophy is being broken up at pace.

Mbaye is the latest piece, and arguably the most eye-catching in terms of upside. An 18-year-old Champions League-hardened winger, already an international goalscorer, dropping into a side trying to prove last season’s European success was no one-off.
Liverpool may yet unveil Barcola as the headline act of their summer. But if that medical throws up a late twist, they’ll know exactly when and where the market shifted — the moment Aston Villa quietly stole Ibrahim Mbaye from under their nose.
