Aston Villa Signs Aaron Wan-Bissaka on Loan from West Ham

Aston Villa have landed Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham on a season-long loan, with a conditional obligation to buy built into the deal.

The structure echoes Villa’s move for Harvey Elliott last season. West Ham had been holding out for around £25m for the DR Congo right-back, but the final triggers and figures in this agreement remain under wraps. What is clear: if certain conditions are met, Villa will be pushed into a permanent transfer.

They know this kind of clause well. Elliott arrived from Liverpool on loan with an obligation to buy for £35m, but that only kicked in if he reached 10 league appearances. He managed just four. The threshold was never met, the option never activated, and he returned to Anfield this summer. Villa have shown they are willing to walk away if the terms don’t fall their way.

Wan-Bissaka, 28, sat out West Ham’s opening two Championship fixtures while talks with Villa intensified, a clear sign of how advanced negotiations had become and how keen all parties were to secure his return to the Premier League.

West Ham signed him from Manchester United in 2024 on a seven-year contract, backing him as a long-term pillar of their defence. He has played 65 times for the Hammers across two seasons, including 25 appearances last term as the club slid out of the top flight and into the Championship.

His pedigree is not in doubt. At United, Wan-Bissaka racked up 190 appearances, lifting the League Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024, and building a reputation as one of the league’s standout one‑v‑one defenders.

On the international stage, he has become a key figure for DR Congo. He started all four of their matches at the 2026 World Cup, helping drive an impressive run to the round of 32.

Now comes a fresh challenge. A defender with top-level experience, a club pushing to cement itself near the top of the Premier League, and a contract that could lock them together for the long term if everything clicks.
