Arsenal's Pursuit of Julián Álvarez Continues Amid Barcelona Dreams

Arsenal refuse to give up on Julián Álvarez – even as the player dreams of Barcelona.

The Premier League champions have tracked the Atlético Madrid forward all summer, pushing to bring him back to England. Álvarez, though, has been clear: his ideal move is to La Liga’s other giant, not a return to the Premier League. Barcelona remains the fantasy.

Spain insists the story isn’t over.

Reports there claim Arsenal are still firmly in the race and that a move to north London is becoming more plausible as the window ticks towards its close. Sport in Spain even goes as far as to say Álvarez’s future “will be decided in the coming hours,” with “all signs” pointing to England. Atlético, they say, are actively steering him towards N5, preferring to sell to Arsenal over a direct rival.

This is a player who has already pushed for a way out. Earlier in the summer, the 26-year-old declared that “the best thing for everyone is a transfer and I want to fulfil my dream,” after Real Madrid reportedly saw a £129 million bid rejected by Atlético. The door to the Bernabéu shut. The desire to leave did not.

Sensing an opening, Mikel Arteta moved quickly. The Arsenal manager has phoned Álvarez personally, making the case for a central role at the Emirates. So far, the response has been cool. The former Manchester City forward, by all accounts, still only has eyes for Barcelona.

The plot thickens in London. Atlético sporting director Mateu Alemany is currently in the capital to work on a deal with Chelsea for Nicolas Jackson. According to Sport Witness, Álvarez’s name is also on the agenda during this trip, with Arsenal’s interest very much alive and part of the wider conversation.

Arsenal sit right at the heart of a tangled attacking market. Viktor Gyökeres is now being linked with Barcelona. Gabriel Jesus is said to be on the Catalan club’s shortlist as well. Arteta, though, is understood to be braced for the possibility that no new forward arrives at all before the window closes.

There are other moving parts. Gabriel Martinelli has reportedly rejected an offer from Galatasaray. Victor Osimhen is said to be on Arsenal’s radar, another elite striker loosely attached to the Gunners’ name as the days run out.

Plenty of chases have already led nowhere. Arsenal are not involved in the pursuit of Bradley Barcola. Moves for Vinícius Jr and Morgan Rogers have collapsed: Vinícius chose to extend his contract at Real Madrid, while Rogers joined Chelsea in a British record transfer.

The numbers around Álvarez are eye-catching. Sport Witness relay that Arsenal’s proposal stands at “€80m plus Viktor Gyökeres,” an enormous package built around a marquee fee and a proven goalscorer. The same reports state that Álvarez could double his salary at the Emirates and walk into a key role under Arteta.

If Arsenal do somehow drag this deal over the line, the tactical options are obvious. The Argentine could replace Martinelli on the left, cutting inside and driving at goal, or he could operate through the middle as an alternative – or even a challenger – to Kai Havertz.

The money is there. The role is there. The manager is on the phone.

Now the only question is whether Julián Álvarez is willing to trade his Barcelona dream for Arsenal’s reality.
