Asian Games Cricket Quarterfinals Canceled Due to Rain, India and Pakistan Advance Without Playing

The men’s cricket quarterfinals at the Asian Games in Nagoya were washed out by persistent rain, leading to India and Pakistan advancing to the semifinals without playing a single ball. Both teams progressed based on their higher ICC T20I rankings, sparking criticism of the event’s organization.

Quarterfinal Matches Abandoned

Pakistan benefited first when their quarterfinal against Hong Kong was canceled due to wet conditions. Soon after, India’s quarterfinal clash with Afghanistan was called off 16 minutes before the toss because of continuous rain and an unplayable outfield. The seeding rule used team rankings from July 23, 2026, which placed India above Afghanistan, giving India the semifinal spot.

Players Express Disappointment Over Lost Opportunity

Afghanistan’s Mohammad Akram Zazai expressed frustration, believing his team was ready to compete. He highlighted that Afghanistan had already played twice on the same ground and understood the conditions well.

“We are here for the match but unfortunately it rained,” Zazai said. “The rain started yesterday, so hard luck for us. We would have been happy to play here with India – our players are in form.”

He added, “We just wanted to play the match so that there was a chance. Even five or six overs would have kept Afghanistan in it. Our team is good even in short formats.”

Fans Criticize Organizers for Poor Ground Management
