Arsenal Targets Manchester United Youngsters Scanlon and Ogunneye

Arsenal have stepped up their talent raid on Manchester United, launching a bold bid to sign youngsters Scanlon and Ogunneye in what is fast becoming a full-scale tug-of-war between two of England’s most powerful academies.

The Telegraph reports that the Premier League champions want both players in London this summer as part of an aggressive overhaul of their youth ranks. Arsenal have tracked the pair closely and believe they can tempt them away from Old Trafford on permanent deals.

This is not happening in a vacuum. United have already stung Arsenal in recent seasons by prising Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven out of north London. Arsenal’s response is clear: they are pushing back, and they are doing it by going after United’s own emerging prospects.

Player Backgrounds

Scanlon, 19, and Ogunneye, 20, both left United on loan last season in search of senior football. Scanlon made six appearances for Swindon Town in League Two, scoring once. Ogunneye went further, featuring 21 times for Newport County before returning to United in January.

Those loan spells appear to have sharpened their ambitions. Both players are now understood to be ready to leave United permanently to accelerate their careers. Arsenal have moved quickly to exploit that opening.

Contract Details

Scanlon is believed to have already agreed a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, underlining how committed Arsenal are to securing what they see as top-level potential. Ogunneye is also firmly in their sights as they look to strengthen the next wave beneath Mikel Arteta’s first team.

Recruitment Strategy

The timing is no coincidence. Arsenal’s youth recruitment drive has kicked into gear following the appointment of Pascal De Maesschalck as the club’s new academy head, replacing Per Mertesacker. De Maesschalck arrives with a reputation for building strong development pathways, and Arsenal are wasting no time arming him with fresh talent.

Sporting director Andrea Berta set out the club’s stance in welcoming the Belgian to north London, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Pascal to Arsenal. He brings extensive experience from some of Europe's leading football clubs and has an outstanding track record in youth development. We are excited to have him with us as we continue to build for the future, developing young players and identifying the best emerging talent to join Arsenal on a journey towards professional football."

That future is being built quickly. Arsenal are now working to finalise paperwork and compensation agreements with United for Scanlon and Ogunneye, as they look to close the deals and integrate the pair into their system.

The recruitment push will not stop there. The club are also expected to complete moves for other teenage prospects, including Vincent Joseph and Axel Donczew, in the coming weeks as they deepen the pool beneath the senior squad.

For supporters, the intrigue lies beyond the transfer headlines. With Arsenal and United trading blows at academy level, the real question is which of these young names will break through and force their way into Arteta’s plans in the years to come.
