Arsenal Targeting Manchester United Starlet JJ Gabriel
Arsenal are circling around one of Manchester United’s brightest young prospects, with teenage forward JJ Gabriel pushing to walk away from Old Trafford.
The highly rated attacker has asked United to cancel his registration, a move that stunned staff who had earmarked him as one of the standout talents in their academy and already handed him senior involvement in pre-season. He had been tipped to feature in the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton, only for his decision over his future to change the picture completely.
For Arsenal, the situation is intriguing and familiar in equal measure.
Arsenal look to hit back in youth market
The North London club have felt United’s pull at academy level in recent years. Chido Obi Martin and Ayden Heaven both left Arsenal for United, painful departures for a club that prides itself on producing elite talent.
The response has been sharp. Arsenal have since brought in James Scanlon and Habeeb Ogunneye from United, and beat them to the signing of Igor Tyjon from Blackburn Rovers. Under new Academy Director Pascal de Maesschalck, the club have gone on the offensive in the youth market, aggressively targeting high-upside prospects at home and abroad.
Gabriel fits that brief perfectly.
Capable of playing through the middle or off the left, he offers versatility and direct threat in the final third. With Arsenal’s left-wing options thinned by the exits of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, any top-level youngster in that role can see a clear path to minutes. The club have already shown they will not hesitate to trust teenagers: Max Dowman and Marli Salmon both made senior debuts last season at just 15 and 16.
Gabriel also has history in London. As a youngster he spent time in both Arsenal’s and Chelsea’s academies before eventually joining United, adding another layer of intrigue to a potential return.
European giants on alert
Arsenal are not alone. Manchester City and Barcelona are also understood to be very keen on Gabriel, with Europe’s top clubs alerted to the chance to sign a player widely viewed as one of the country’s leading young forwards.
That level of interest underlines the scale of the opportunity – and the potential blow for United if they cannot persuade him to stay.
Arsenal, though, can sell a powerful story right now. They are champions, favourites to defend their title, and operating from a position of strength that United simply do not share at this moment. For a teenager weighing up where his career can accelerate fastest, that matters.
Big investment, clear strategy
The pursuit of Gabriel sits within a much broader plan. Arsenal’s academy recruitment has been supercharged, with significant money committed to emerging talent.
Victor Ozhianvuna is due to arrive from Shamrock Rovers in January. Holger and Edwin Quintero will join in the summer from Independiente, alongside Andria Bartishvili once his deal with Kolkheti 1913 expires. The outlay on that trio for next summer alone is believed to exceed £10million, a striking figure for players yet to kick a ball for the first team.
This is not scattergun spending. It is a calculated bet on the next wave.
Landing JJ Gabriel would be something else again. Given the context – United’s shock, the interest from City and Barcelona, the tug-of-war history between the two English giants at youth level – his signature would be viewed inside Arsenal as a genuine coup.
