Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana as Sunderland Seals Deal

Arsenal’s search for a winger has taken a late Deadline Day hit, with Malick Fofana heading to Sunderland after the Gunners refused to meet Lyon’s demands.

Mikel Arteta’s side opened talks with the Ligue 1 club on Monday, having identified the 21-year-old as a key option to bolster their attacking depth. Fofana was open to the move and, according to Fabrizio Romano, even held discussions with Arteta about a switch to north London.

The deal never reached the numbers Lyon wanted. Reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein state that Arsenal walked away rather than pay the French club’s asking price of around €40 million. That hesitation opened the door.

Sunderland charged straight through it.

The Premier League newcomers moved quickly to agree a €30 million fee with Lyon, plus add-ons that could push the final package closer to Lyon’s original valuation. While Arsenal haggled, Sunderland closed.

For Arsenal, it stings. They have already trimmed their options on the left flank, sanctioning the exits of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli this summer, and were looking to restock in wide areas before the window shut. Instead, one of their primary targets will be flying to the north east for a medical.

Fofana’s stock has been rising. Earlier in the summer, Crystal Palace were close to an agreement with Lyon, only for the player to reject a move to Selhurst Park. He has now chosen Sunderland over a late push from Arsenal, a twist few expected at the start of the week.

The situation leaves Arsenal light out wide at a delicate moment. Ethan Nwaneri is set to undergo a medical at Borussia Dortmund ahead of a loan move, trimming Arteta’s attacking resources even further. Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge earlier in the window, but the plan had been to add another winger with first-team readiness.

Instead, on Deadline Day, Arsenal watch a long-targeted winger board a plane to Wearside. Sunderland gain a statement signing. And a club with title ambitions is left hoping that a thin flank doesn’t become a glaring weakness in the months ahead.
