Arsenal Targets Manchester United's James Scanlon for Youth Rebuild
Arsenal are closing in on another raid of Manchester United’s academy, with highly rated winger James Scanlon set to join the club as part of a sweeping overhaul of their Under-21 set-up.
The 19-year-old, on United’s books since 2021, is expected to move to north London on a free transfer. Standard Sport understands the deal includes a hefty 40 per cent sell-on clause in United’s favour, underlining how highly the Old Trafford club still rate the Gibraltar international.
Scanlon has already completed his medical, and the two clubs are expected to finalise the transfer within the next 48 hours.
No loan, no time to waste
Arsenal have no immediate plans to send Scanlon out on loan. The winger will initially link up with the Under-21s, but the intention on both sides is clear: this is not a slow-burn project.
Scanlon is joining with the aim of forcing his way into Mikel Arteta’s first-team thinking as quickly as he can. The pathway has been laid out at London Colney; it is now up to him to sprint down it.
Internationally, he already carries an unusual level of experience for a teenager. Scanlon has been capped 24 times at senior level by Gibraltar, exposure that has sharpened his game and drawn interest from across Europe, particularly in Spain.
Sevilla pushed hard to sign him permanently in January. United, wary of losing him outright, chose instead to send him to Swindon Town on loan for the second half of last season.
Familiar faces and glowing references
Arsenal’s move is not a shot in the dark. New Under-21 head coach David Horseman worked briefly with Scanlon during his time at United and has been a strong internal advocate for the deal, recommending the winger to the club’s hierarchy.
The references did not stop there. Chris Perkins, now at Arsenal and formerly head of academy recruitment at Derby County, also gave a positive assessment. Perkins oversaw Scanlon’s progress through the age groups at Derby before the youngster joined United, and his endorsement added further weight to the move.
The transfer continues a clear theme. Scanlon will follow Habeeb Ogunneye in swapping Old Trafford for the Emirates. Like Scanlon, Ogunneye arrived on a free transfer, with a significant sell-on clause built into the agreement.
Under-21s become a priority battleground
This is not just opportunism from Arsenal. It is part of a deliberate reset.
There has been a renewed push at the club to raise the standard of the Under-21 group, turning it into a more aggressive launchpad for the first team rather than a holding pen for prospects.
The recruitment drive has been busy. On Tuesday, 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he would be leaving Blackburn Rovers after Arsenal finally secured his signature, another piece in a rapidly evolving youth picture.
Scanlon now joins that wave, arriving with senior caps, European interest on his CV, and a clear message from Arsenal: the next phase of their project will be built as much on smart academy strikes as on headline signings.
