Arsenal's Bold Move for Julian Alvarez: Gyokeres as Bait
Arsenal are pushing hard to land Julian Alvarez – and are ready to use Viktor Gyokeres as the bait.
With the final days of the summer window ticking away, Mikel Arteta is still hunting a centre-forward he believes can turn a title-winning side into a Champions League-winning one. Alvarez remains his preferred option, even as links to Galatasaray forward Victor Osimhen refuse to die down.
Arsenal raise the stakes
Gyokeres arrived from Sporting last summer for £55 million and delivered a strong first campaign, hitting 21 goals in all competitions. Under most circumstances, that return would buy a striker time and security.
Not this time.
Arsenal’s hierarchy believe they need a higher ceiling at No.9 if they are to dominate Europe as well as defend their Premier League crown. That conviction has led to an aggressive move: a swap proposal to Atletico Madrid that would send Gyokeres the other way and bring Alvarez to the Emirates.
According to Spanish outlet Diario Sport, the reigning champions have put forward an offer of around £68.5 million plus Gyokeres for the Argentina international. It would mean cash, a ready-made replacement, and a significant profit opportunity for Atletico after just one season with the former Manchester City man.
The report adds that Arsenal are prepared to part with the Sweden international just a year into his time in north London, such is their determination to secure Alvarez.
Barcelona in the background, Atletico in the way
Alvarez has made no secret that Barcelona is his preferred next destination. That is the move he wants. The problem for him lies in Spain, not England.
Atletico are deeply reluctant to strengthen a direct LaLiga rival and, on top of that, Barcelona’s well-documented financial issues make a £100m-plus deal extremely complicated. Even if Barça could raise the funds, Atletico’s stance on selling within the league remains a major obstacle.
That’s where Arsenal sense their opening.
Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that talks over a potential deal have already taken place in London. Diario Sport now go a step further, claiming Alvarez’s “head has turned” towards the Emirates as Atletico’s resistance to Barcelona hardens.
Financially, there is little drama. Both clubs could structure a deal, and Alvarez is expected to double his wages if he signs for Arsenal. From the player’s side, the project is clear: a Premier League champion, a young, ambitious manager, and a squad already stacked with elite defenders and midfielders.
The missing piece?
Arsenal’s 3-0 dismantling of Coventry on the opening night of the Premier League season showed once again the power and depth of Arteta’s side. Yet even on a night of control and comfort, the conversation quickly swung back to the one thing they still lack.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville underlined the impact Alvarez could have if Arsenal pull it off.
“We think that Alvarez wants to go to Barcelona,” he said. “But if Arsenal could get Alvarez somehow that is going to light this place up, because then you have a world class striker to go with all the other world class defenders and midfield players.
“They’d become not just Premier League title winners, but you’re then thinking that they can go that extra step and win the Champions League as well.
“He does need that little bit of magic up front that when you don’t play well they’ll go and win a big game for you.
“Has he got enough of that? I’m not sure.”
It was a pointed question wrapped inside a compliment. Alvarez is proven at the highest level, but Arsenal’s bar is now brutally high: turn domestic dominance into European glory.
A bold gamble on the horizon
For Gyokeres, the situation is stark. Twenty-one goals and a £55m price tag might not be enough to keep him if Arsenal believe Alvarez is the man to elevate them again. For Atletico, the choice is equally sharp: hold a player whose heart may be set on leaving, or cash in with a swap-and-cash package that avoids strengthening Barcelona.
Arsenal return to Premier League duty on August 31 away to Aston Villa, where Ezri Konsa is set to face his former club. By then, the window will be closed.
