Anthony Martial's Málaga Move: A Career Restart in LaLiga
Anthony Martial could be about to restart his stalled career in Spain, with Málaga pushing to bring the French forward to LaLiga.
According to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, the Andalusian club are in "advanced negotiations" with the 30-year-old, who has been without a team for two months following the termination of his contract with CF Monterrey. Aouna reports on X that discussions are progressing well and that an agreement is close.
For Martial, this is another crossroads. For Málaga, it’s a gamble they feel they have to take.
Málaga’s survival bet
Back in the Spanish top flight after years away, Málaga climbed out of the wilderness in the summer but have found the return unforgiving. Three points on the board, 18th in the table, and already fighting to keep their heads above water.
A player of Martial’s pedigree, even one clearly on the slide, offers something they do not currently have: a forward who has lived inside the pressure cooker of elite football, from title races to European nights.
If the deal goes through, it will be a move born as much from necessity as from ambition.
From Monterrey exit to uncertainty
Martial’s most recent stop was Mexico. He joined CF Monterrey on a contract that was supposed to run until mid-2027. It never got close.
The agreement was terminated in July for reasons that have not been made clear publicly. On the pitch, the numbers told their own story: 20 matches, one goal, three assists. Flashes, not fire.
Since then, he has drifted in the free-agent market, his name more associated with what might have been than what he still is.
A career that never quite exploded
This is the harsh part. Martial is only 30, but his career already feels like a cautionary tale.
Capped 30 times by France, he burst through at AS Monaco, electric and fearless, the kind of forward who made defenders backpedal. Manchester United saw the future and paid at least €60 million to bring him to Old Trafford. Early on, it looked like money well spent. Goals, swagger, the famous debut against Liverpool – he seemed destined to become the face of a new era.
Then the progression slowed. Confidence dipped. Injuries crept in. The promise never fully hardened into consistency.
A loan to Sevilla was meant to relaunch him. It didn’t. He failed to convince there, and by 2024, United cut ties, terminating his contract while he was injured and approaching the end of his deal.
Short stops and shrinking margins
The next chapters came quickly and without stability.
Martial signed for AEK Athens and, on paper, produced a respectable return with nine goals. It still wasn’t enough. The Greek club moved on from him in short order, unconvinced he was the long-term answer.
Mexico followed. A new continent, a fresh start, and another false dawn. Monterrey’s decision to end his contract months into a long-term deal underlined how far his stock had fallen.
Now he stands on the edge again, with Málaga offering what might be one of his final chances at the highest level.
If the move is completed, he will walk into a club fighting to stay in LaLiga and a fanbase desperate for a spark. The question is no longer what Martial could become. It’s whether there is still one more real season left in him.
