Álvarez Rejects Man City Return for Barcelona Dream
Julián Álvarez has turned his back on a dramatic return to Etihad Stadium, flatly rejecting Manchester City’s approach before the Premier League champions could even put an official offer on the table, according to Cadena SER.
City contacted Atlético Madrid to explore the possibility of re-signing their former No 9. The answer from the player was immediate and emphatic: no desire to go back to Manchester.
That refusal drops another twist into what has become the defining transfer saga of the summer. At 26, Álvarez is locked in a stand-off with Los Rojiblancos, wanted by some of Europe’s biggest clubs yet seemingly with only one destination in mind.
Arsenal blocked, City rejected, Barcelona or nothing
Arsenal have pushed hardest from England. Mikel Arteta’s side view Álvarez as a priority signing, the centrepiece of their attacking plans and, in north London at least, a dream acquisition. The response has been the same as City’s. Rejection. Repeatedly.
Álvarez does not want London. He does not want Manchester. He wants Barcelona.
His stance has been clear for weeks. The Argentine is desperate to join Barça, who already tested Atlético’s resolve earlier in the window with a €100 million (£86m) bid that was knocked back.

The problem? Atlético’s answer is as blunt as the player’s.

Club figures reiterated their position this week, insisting there is a “zero per cent chance” of Álvarez being allowed to join Barcelona. For them, strengthening Barça is off the table, regardless of the fee.
So the gridlock is complete. The player is fixated on Barcelona. Atlético are immovable. English clubs are ready to deal, but Álvarez has no interest in returning to the Premier League.
Personal reasons behind England reluctance
His reluctance to go back to England is not about football. Reports in Spain point to personal circumstances driving his decision.
Álvarez is understood to be acutely aware of UK visa regulations that would make it significantly harder for his family to visit regularly. In Spain, those obstacles disappear. Life off the pitch, not minutes on it, is shaping his future.
That marks a notable shift from his first spell in England. When he arrived at Manchester City from River Plate for £14m in January 2022, he embraced the move. On the pitch, it worked spectacularly.
Álvarez scored 36 goals in 103 appearances for City and played his part in Pep Guardiola’s historic Treble. Two summers ago, he left for Atlético in an £82m deal, a move that looked like the next logical step in a rising career.
Now, the same league he once lit up has become a destination he is determined to avoid.
Trapped between a club and a dream
According to Cadena SER, Álvarez has been reminded repeatedly that Arsenal represent his only realistic escape route from Madrid this summer. Still, his stance holds. He wants to remain in Spain and keep the Barcelona option alive.
That leaves him in a tight corner: a club refusing to sell to Barça, and a player refusing to entertain a return to England.
City’s approach has been rebuffed. Atlético will not pick up the phone to Barcelona. Arsenal wait in the wings, knowing they are the only viable exit but still unable to shift the player’s priorities.
For now, the saga is frozen.
