Liverpool are back in a familiar place: staring at a contract clock and wondering how loudly it’s ticking.

This time, it’s Alisson.

The Brazilian, one of the pillars of the Jürgen Klopp era and still among the finest goalkeepers on the planet, is into the final year of his deal. He turns 34 in October. He earns a reported £250,000 a week. And right now, there is no sign of an agreement to extend his stay at Anfield.

For a player of his stature, that silence is deafening.

Silence around a superstar

The latest word from inside the club came via James Pearce on The Athletic’s Walk On podcast, and it was hardly reassuring for those craving clarity. Pearce explained that there has been no movement at all on a new contract, no serious talks, no rush.

“Is he going to still be around next season? We don’t know that at the moment,” Pearce said. “From what I’ve been told, it’s just too soon on all sides. There’s not been those talks yet.”

Everyone might be calm for now. The calendar won’t be.

From January, unless something changes, Alisson will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with clubs outside England. That is the hard deadline lurking behind Liverpool’s relaxed stance. Earlier this year he was linked with Juventus; nothing came of it, but the idea of European heavyweights circling a soon-to-be free agent of his quality is hardly far-fetched.

A reminder of his worth

If anyone at Anfield needed a reminder of what is at stake, Bournemouth provided it.

In a tight 1-0 win on the south coast, Alisson delivered one of those moments that have defined his Liverpool career. Evanilson looked certain to score. Alisson’s reflexes said otherwise. It was the standout save of the game, the kind of intervention that turns dropped points into three and keeps title challenges on track.

This is what Liverpool are weighing up: a goalkeeper who has already won every major trophy with the club, who still produces match-defining saves, but who is edging towards the latter stages of his career.

The Mamardashvili question

The dilemma is sharpened by the presence of Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Signed from Valencia last year, the Georgian international is not just another name on the teamsheet. Inside the club, he is widely viewed as Alisson’s natural heir. Yet he has not yet been handed the gloves on a permanent basis.

Pearce underlined the tension this creates. Handing Alisson a new long-term deal would not be a simple piece of housekeeping; it would reshape the goalkeeping department.

Mamardashvili, he suggested, is unlikely to accept a third straight season as an understudy if Alisson remains the undisputed number one. At some point, one of them has to be the future. The other becomes a problem to solve.

Nine-year itch?

There is another layer to this. It might not just be Liverpool who are weighing up the next step.

By the end of the 2026-27 season, Alisson will have spent nine years on Merseyside. He will have completed the set in terms of silverware. Champions League, Premier League, domestic cups, Club World Cup – all ticked off.

After nearly a decade at the same club, even icons sometimes look for a new challenge. A different league. A different culture. A final big move before the twilight years.

Liverpool have to consider that possibility too. Are they trying to persuade a legend to stay, or planning for the day he decides he has done it all at Anfield?

A decision that can’t drift

For now, there is no panic inside the club. No stand-off. No public brinkmanship. Just that phrase from Pearce: “too soon”.

The risk is obvious. “Too soon” in September can become “too late” in January if Europe’s giants sense an opening and start making their pitch. And Liverpool, more than most, know how quickly a contract saga can turn from background noise into a season-long storyline.

This one involves their last line of defence and one of the defining players of their modern era.
