Alisson Becker Fined £8,000 for Misconduct After Controversial Penalty Decision

Alisson Becker has been hit with an £8,000 fine by the Football Association after losing his temper in the aftermath of Liverpool’s controversial penalty decision.

The Liverpool goalkeeper’s frustration boiled over at full-time as he headed towards the tunnel, taking it out on the fourth official’s electronic numbers board. The incident, which took place in the tunnel area after the whistle, led to an FA charge for improper conduct.

In a statement, the FA outlined the offence: it was alleged that the goalkeeper “acted in an improper manner around the tunnel area after the final whistle.” Alisson has accepted the charge and the standard penalty that comes with it.

His anger stemmed from a late penalty award for a foul on Neco Williams. The challenge came after the defender had already got his shot away, with contact following the strike. Alisson was visibly incensed by the decision on the pitch and clearly still seething as he left it.

The chaos around the incident did not end there. Just before the foul, the fourth official’s numbers board malfunctioned, delaying a triple substitution that Andoni Iraola had been trying to make. The stoppage added to the sense of confusion and tension on the touchline.

That pressure finally told when referee Sam Barrott pointed to the spot. Since then, the Key Match Incident (KMI) Panel has reviewed the episode and concluded that Barrott made the wrong decision in awarding the penalty.

The ruling does nothing to change the result, and it does not spare Alisson from his punishment. It does, however, underline exactly why Liverpool’s goalkeeper felt the sense of injustice that pushed him over the edge.
