Alexander Isak's Stunning Brace Leads Liverpool to Victory

Alexander Isak needed only 10 minutes to rip the noise out of Portman Road.

The Swedish striker struck twice inside the opening nine minutes of Liverpool’s trip to Ipswich Town on Friday, Sept. 4, delivering a ruthless early salvo that left the Tractor Boys stunned and handed the Reds a dream start.

Both goals carried the fingerprints of Cody Gakpo, who spent the final days of the transfer window linked with a move away but ultimately remained on Merseyside. He played like a man intent on proving why.

For the first, Gakpo drifted infield and picked up space between the lines, then slid a pass into Isak on the edge of the box. The forward took aim from distance. Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen got something on the shot, but not enough; the ball squirmed past him and into the net.

Liverpool smelled weakness. The second goal was sharper, slicker, and owed even more to Gakpo’s vision.

Deep in his own half, the Dutchman shaped his body and, with the outside of his boot, bent a superb ball into the corridor between Ipswich’s back line and the edge of the area. It invited a race. Isak accepted.

He burst onto the pass, still with work to do, and showed the composure of a striker in form. A drop of the shoulder, a touch to unbalance his marker, and then a cool left-footed finish across goal. Two chances, two goals, and Ipswich reeling.

That quickfire brace lifted Isak to three goals for the season. Gakpo, creator-in-chief on the night, moved to three assists to go with his single goal so far, underlining his importance after all the speculation around his future.

The early onslaught also carved out a slice of history. Isak’s double was the fastest by a Liverpool player from the opening whistle since 2011, when Maxi Rodriguez hit two in the first seven minutes against Fulham. For Ipswich, it ranked among the quickest two-goal concessions in the club’s Premier League era, a brutal reminder of the gap in clinical edge at this level.

Portman Road had waited a long time for nights like this back in the top flight. Liverpool and Isak made sure it will remember this one for very different reasons.
