Alex Mowatt Joins Derby County on Two-Year Deal
Derby County have finally landed their man.
Alex Mowatt has completed a permanent move from West Bromwich Albion, signing a two-year deal for a fee understood to be around £600,000 – significantly lower than the £2m figure that had been circulating in the West Midlands.
The 29-year-old midfielder underwent a medical and wrapped up the formalities today, ending a long pursuit from head coach John Eustace, who had pushed to bring him in last summer. Derby kept watching, kept asking, and when the chance came this window, they moved.
Long-term target secured
Mowatt had been in the final year of his contract at the Hawthorns, despite signing a two-year extension to stay with Albion not long ago. That deal never stopped Derby tracking him. They monitored his game time, his role, and the shifting picture at West Brom before making their move.
Eustace gets a player he knows well: a left-footed organiser who can sit at the base of midfield, dictate tempo and build attacks. Derby see that Championship know-how as crucial. Mowatt has spent the last five years at West Brom, with a promotion push, a loan spell, and a series of demanding seasons shaping him into a seasoned second-tier operator.
A career built in the Championship
Born in Doncaster, Mowatt first broke through at Leeds United, graduating from their academy and quickly becoming a regular at Elland Road. His form earned him recognition with England under-19s and under-20s, marking him out early as one to watch.
His real leadership credentials emerged at Barnsley. After moving to Oakwell, Mowatt grew into the heartbeat of the side, eventually captaining the Tykes to the Championship play-offs in 2021. He made more than 140 appearances for the club, driving them from midfield and establishing himself as one of the division’s most reliable performers.
There was a loan stint at Oxford United along the way, a spell that kept him sharp and in demand before West Brom moved for him on a free transfer under Valerien Ismaël.
At the time, Ismaël was effusive in his assessment. “He is an outstanding midfield player with outstanding qualities and mentality. He scores goals outside the box and on set-pieces he is very dangerous. He is a hard worker with the right mentality and a lot of energy. The way Alex plays will suit the West Brom mentality."
Still sharp, still competing
Mowatt has already featured for Albion this season, starting in a 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham United and playing 73 minutes before being replaced by Conor Townsend. That outing underlined his match fitness and readiness to step straight into Derby’s plans.
He also spent time on loan at Middlesbrough, helping them finish fourth in the Championship table, another campaign that added to his bank of high-pressure games at this level.
Derby are buying all of that: the leadership from Barnsley, the promotion battles at West Brom and Middlesbrough, the technical schooling from Leeds. They are paying for a midfielder who knows this division inside out and still has plenty of running left.
Now the question is simple: can Alex Mowatt be the piece that turns Derby’s long-term planning into a genuine push up the league?
