Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is hanging by a thread after the left-back was left out of the squad for Sunday’s trip to Elche, capping a whirlwind 24 hours of doubt, tension and mixed messages around one of La Masia’s brightest products.
From shock exit reports to fresh doubts
On Saturday afternoon, the Barcelona fanbase was jolted by reports from Jijantes claiming Balde had decided to leave his boyhood club. The story landed hard. A homegrown full-back, once tipped as a long-term starter for both Barça and Spain, suddenly painted as a player ready to walk away.
That noise came on the back of a key meeting on Thursday, when Balde’s agent Jorge Mendes sat down with the club’s Sporting Director. The conversation set the backdrop for Hansi Flick’s pointed words in his prematch press conference, which only added fuel to the fire.
Asked about Balde’s situation, Flick didn’t hide behind clichés.
“It’s a difficult question because he has enormous quality and it’s important to know if a player is convinced to be able to compete in his position. That’s what I want to see from all my players,” the German said, making the issue about mentality as much as talent.
He pushed the point further.
“Every day I see what the players do – the level – and if they show me that they have the level to play. In the end, we have to play as a team, only then will we have success. I need everyone to be one hundred percent.”
For a 22-year-old trying to re-establish himself after losing momentum, the message was clear: prove you’re all in, or step aside.
Motivation or breaking point?
By Saturday evening, the narrative seemed to twist again. Mundo Deportivo reported that Balde had actually taken Flick’s comments as a challenge, not a slight, and was ready to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place.
The stance sounded defiant but conditional. If the club still valued him, he would battle for minutes. If not, he would accept the need to move on.
Then came the squad list for Elche. Balde’s name was missing.
In isolation, a single omission might be brushed off as a technical choice or a fitness call. In this context, after the week’s meetings, the public questioning of his commitment and the transfer noise, it felt like something more. With Balde cut from the travelling group, his exit now looks closer than ever.
Premier League door wide open
If Barcelona do decide to cash in, there will be no shortage of takers. As a La Masia graduate and former Spain international with age firmly on his side, Balde has long attracted interest from the Premier League.
Manchester United are currently the club most strongly linked and their need is obvious. A 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their league opener on Saturday underlined how urgently they require defensive reinforcements, particularly in wide areas. A dynamic, attack-minded full-back of Balde’s profile fits that brief.
For United, it would be a chance to buy a high-upside defender still years away from his peak. For Balde, it could be a reset: a fresh league, a new dressing room, and the opportunity to force his way back into Luis de la Fuente’s Spain plans from a different platform.
Flick’s left-back puzzle for Elche
While Balde’s future drifts towards the exit door, Flick still has a game to win.
With the youngster omitted, Jordi Pesquer is now expected to start at left-back against Elche, as had already been suggested earlier in the week. It would be a significant opportunity for Pesquer, and a clear signal from Flick about the type of profiles and attitudes he wants in his starting XI.
New permanent signing Joao Cancelo has also made the squad, but his readiness is another question. After completing his move from Al-Hilal only this week, he may not yet be fit enough to start. That leaves Pesquer in pole position to stake an early claim.
So Barcelona head to Elche with a reshaped flank, a new defensive hierarchy taking shape, and a La Masia talent seemingly edging towards the Premier League. If this really is the end of Balde’s time at Camp Nou, the only question left is where – and how quickly – the next chapter begins.
