Alejandro Balde has made his stance clear. He wants to stay at Barcelona and fight for his place.
Amid weeks of noise around his future, the 22-year-old has informed the club hierarchy that his preference is to remain at Camp Nou this summer and compete for a spot in the side. The message is on the table; the decision now rests with Barcelona.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Barça have been exploring the possibility of a sale late in the window, but only on their terms. It would take a genuinely substantial offer from a top club to drag Balde away before Deadline Day. Anything less, and the Catalans are expected to hold firm.
United circle, but cash is tight
Manchester United have been among the clubs testing the water. After accepting that Lewis Hall is out of reach, with Newcastle United making it clear the England defender is not for sale, INEOS have shifted their search for a left-back elsewhere.
Balde fits the profile: young, quick, already seasoned at the highest level and with Champions League experience. On paper, he ticks a lot of United’s boxes as they look for reliable cover and competition for Luke Shaw.
The problem is money. Reports indicate United are only in a position to push for a loan at this stage of the summer, their budget heavily eaten up by a midfield rebuild costing around £148 million upfront. A temporary deal is unlikely to tempt Barcelona if they believe Balde can still play a role this season or if they are holding out for a major fee.
That gap between what United can offer and what Barça would accept has left the move stalling before it ever really got going.
Barcelona leaning towards keeping Balde
Balde’s own stance now shifts the dynamic further. With the defender committed to staying and proving himself, Barcelona have even less incentive to entertain cut-price or short-term proposals.
If United cannot table a lucrative offer, there is little reason for the Spanish giants to weaken their squad depth in a key position. A big bid could still change the picture, but as things stand, the scenario points towards Balde remaining in Catalonia beyond the deadline.
INEOS look elsewhere as clock ticks
United’s recruitment team are not short of alternatives, but time is shrinking fast.
Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas and RB Leipzig captain David Raum are also on the shortlist as INEOS weigh up late-window options at left-back. Any move for those players carries its own complications: their clubs would need to find replacements quickly if negotiations advance, and that reality drives up both price and difficulty in the final days of the window.
While the left-back search drags on, United have already completed their major midfield surgery. Carlos Baleba was officially unveiled as a United player on Tuesday evening, though an ankle ligament injury picked up in pre-season means he will not feature in the immediate fixtures.
He joins Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in a revamped engine room for Michael Carrick’s side, a trio expected to reshape how United play through the middle.
The back line, though, remains unfinished. With Balde intent on staying put and Barcelona in no mood to bargain, United and INEOS are running out of days to find the answer on the left.
