Alejandro Balde's Barcelona Future in Doubt
Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future is turning into one of the sagas of the summer.
Once billed as the long-term heir to the left flank at Camp Nou, the 20-year-old now finds himself on the fringes under Hansi Flick, with serious interest building from abroad and tension growing behind the scenes.
Flick freezes Balde out
The first real warning sign came with the squad list. Barcelona host Elche in their La Liga opener this evening, and Balde is nowhere to be seen. Not injured. Not suspended. Simply left out.
For a homegrown talent who only recently looked untouchable in that role, the omission lands like a statement. Flick has made his choice for now.
Inside the club, the hierarchy increasingly view Joao Cancelo as their starting left-back. The Portuguese, naturally a right-back, has been trusted to lock down the position, while Gerard Romero is seen as a temporary deputy.
That leaves Balde on the outside looking in.
Player wants to stay, feels pushed out
Amid the noise, transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has shed light on the player’s stance.
According to Romano, Balde feels Barcelona are actively pushing him towards the exit, repeatedly trying to resolve his future away from the club. The message from his side is very different: he is happy at Barça and wants to stay to fight for his place.
The problem is that Flick’s view appears far colder.
Balde’s pre-season did not convince the new coach, and his form last year veered between explosive and erratic. Injuries cut into his rhythm and exposed those inconsistencies. For a club desperate for reliability in defence, that combination has hurt his standing.
Right now, the sporting direction and the coach see others ahead of him.
Premier League and Europe circle
That uncertainty has alerted some heavyweights.
Aston Villa and SL Benfica have already been linked, sensing an opportunity to prise away a high-upside full-back who still has time on his side. More recently, Manchester United have joined the race and are now tracking the situation closely.
United are in the market for a new left-back and see Balde as a strong fit: young, aggressive, technically gifted, and with top-level experience already on his CV. If Barcelona truly open the door, they are expected to be in the queue.
And there will be a queue. A 20-year-old Spain international with his athletic profile does not come around often.
Barcelona’s price – and the clock
One thing is clear from Barcelona’s side: they will not allow him to leave on the cheap.
The Catalan club value Balde at around €40 million at minimum. For a player who has slipped down the pecking order, that is a significant figure, but it reflects both his age and his ceiling.
Time, though, is ticking. The window is moving towards its final stretch. Balde wants to stay and fight. Flick trusts Cancelo. The market is waiting.
Something has to give before the deadline.
