Ajax Sign Yves Bissouma on Free Transfer to Rebuild Career
Ajax have ended weeks of uncertainty around Yves Bissouma’s future, confirming the Mali international has signed a long-term deal at the Johan Cruijff ArenA after leaving Tottenham on a free transfer.
The contract takes effect immediately and runs until June 30, 2027, handing the 28-year-old a sizeable runway to rebuild his reputation and rhythm in the Eredivisie.
From stalled spell at Spurs to a new stage
Bissouma arrives in Amsterdam off the back of a difficult final season in North London. He featured just 11 times in his last campaign at Tottenham, never fully convincing the coaching staff that he could be relied upon week after week.
His time at Spurs never really escaped turbulence. Disciplinary issues repeatedly dragged him off course, including a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide. The noise around him grew louder; his minutes on the pitch shrank.
Now he walks into a very different environment, but with eyes wide open.
“One of the biggest clubs in Europe”
If there are doubts outside, Bissouma is not carrying them with him.
“I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” he said, clearly relishing the chance to plug into one of the continent’s most storied institutions.
The move did not catch him off guard. The groundwork had been laid for some time.
“Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained. “They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”
Ajax have sold him a vision. Bissouma has bought in.
Ajax add steel and experience
For Ajax, this is not a wild swing at a fallen name. It is a targeted play to inject bite, experience and versatility into a midfield that has lacked all three at key moments in recent seasons.
The club’s Technical Director Jordi Cruijff underlined how long the Dutch giants have had Bissouma in their sights.
“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.
No transfer fee, a player with Premier League and European experience, and a profile that can anchor or drive a midfield. From Ajax’s perspective, the equation is obvious.
“I’m a winner” – and a mentor
Bissouma is not hiding behind soft targets or cautious talk. He set his stall out immediately.
“I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” he stated.
Ajax, a club that thrives on young talent, also gain more than just his tackling and ball-carrying. Bissouma wants responsibility in the dressing room as well as on the pitch.
“I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added.
A squad built on academy prospects will now have a seasoned Premier League midfielder offering guidance from the inside, not from the touchline.
Ajax have taken a calculated bet that Bissouma’s edge can be channelled, not contained. If they’re right, the ArenA could be the stage where his career finally matches the talent that first brought him to England.
