Changes to September and October International Breaks for 2026 World Cup Cycle

Following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the usual separate international breaks in September and October have been merged into a single extended period. This new window starts on September 21, 2026, and runs through October 6, 2026. National teams will have up to 16 days to prepare and play, allowing for as many as four matches during this time.

Why the September and October Windows Were Combined

Previously, FIFA's international calendar included two distinct breaks: one week in September and another in October. For 2026, that setup changed due to the unique demands of the expanded World Cup format. With 48 teams competing over six weeks in the summer, FIFA decided to grant players extra recovery time before they return to international fixtures.

This led to merging the September and October breaks, creating a longer camp period for national teams. Coaches will benefit from this uninterrupted stretch to work closely with their squads, a rare opportunity to instill strategies and build cohesion.

November Break Remains Unchanged

In addition to the combined September-October window, the traditional November international break is still in place. From November 9 to November 17, 2026, national sides will gather worldwide to compete in up to two matches.
