Advancing to the Knockout Stage

This World Cup expands the knockout phase. Instead of starting with a round of 16, it begins with a round of 32. The top two teams from each group automatically advance, making 24 teams. Then, the eight best third-place teams also move forward, completing the field of 32.

Understanding Tiebreakers

If teams finish level on points within their group, a set of rules decides who moves on. First, the points earned in matches among the tied teams come into play. If still tied, goal difference in those matches matters next, followed by the number of goals scored in those same encounters.

If no decision emerges, overall goal difference across all group games is checked, then total goals scored. Fair play scores based on yellow and red cards follow. Finally, if needed, FIFA World Rankings break the tie.

Ranking Third-Place Teams

For third-place teams competing to fill the last eight knockout spots, rankings use this order: points in all group matches, goal difference, goals scored, fair play conduct, and if still tied, FIFA World Rankings determine the placement.
