Youri Tielemans: A £35m Steal for Manchester United

Manchester United have made a lot of noise this summer, but one signing is drawing the loudest praise from those who know midfield battles best.

For John Obi Mikel, Youri Tielemans isn’t just a smart buy. He’s the midfield signing of the window – and at £35 million, the former Chelsea man can’t quite believe United pulled it off.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel didn’t bother dressing it up.

“For me, it’s Youri Tielemans. Honestly, how the f*ck did Manchester United get him for £35m? That’s a f*cking steal. I watched him before and during the World Cup, and you can see that this is a player.”

Mikel has shared dressing rooms with some of the finest midfielders of his era. His enthusiasm for Tielemans isn’t casual. It’s rooted in what the Belgian brings to the structure of a team, not just the highlight reel.

He zeroed in on Tielemans’ tactical versatility, a quality United have been crying out for.

“Obviously, we all know how Tielemans plays, he can play as a six, an eight or a ten and when you have a player that can play anywhere, it gives you the variety to change the way you want to play. Tielemans is that guy. He scores goals, he’s dangerous from set pieces, he’s brilliant on the ball, and he rarely gives it away.”

That blend of roles – organiser, creator, and finisher – is rare at elite level. Coaches usually compromise somewhere. With Tielemans, Mikel sees a midfielder who can slide into any zone and still dictate.

There is, of course, the familiar criticism: he’s not the quickest. Mikel waved that aside.

“The only thing people can say is that he’s not the quickest, but he reads the game so well. He is very intelligent with and without the ball. When I look at all the midfielders that have transferred to different clubs [this summer], the best one is Tielemans.”

In a market inflated by potential and promise, Mikel is convinced United have paid mid-table money for Champions League quality.

Alderweireld: The Risk-Taker United Have Needed

Mikel isn’t alone. Another seasoned Belgian voice, Toby Alderweireld, sees Tielemans as the kind of midfielder who changes how a big club attacks games.

In an interview with Hajper, the former Tottenham Hotspur defender pushed back against the obsession with raw numbers.

“The problem with modern football is that sometimes we look too much at stats like assists and goals. Of course, Youri Tielemans creates assists and scores goals, and can shoot from outside the box and score free kicks, but he is so much more than that.”

For Alderweireld, Tielemans’ true value lies in the passes that don’t show up in headline graphics – the ones that turn a safe phase of possession into a chance.

“Tielemans is a link up player, and you have to watch him to understand why he is so important to his teams, not just look at his stats, because he is always trying to play the ball forward. You have some midfield players who have a pass success rate of 98% but they are always playing the ball backwards. Tielemans is a guy who turns, opens up and plays the ball between the lines, and that’s very important for a club like Manchester United who need to break other teams down.”

That line cuts to the heart of United’s long-standing issue. Too often in recent seasons, their midfield has recycled the ball without incision. Tielemans, Alderweireld argues, is wired differently. He looks up, not sideways.

And he does it under pressure.

Built for Old Trafford Expectations

Alderweireld also highlighted Tielemans’ mentality – the intangible quality that can make or break a player at Old Trafford.

“Even when he’s playing in a deep role, he’s playing it in an attacking way. He’s thinking about going forwards, always. Sometimes he will lose the ball but that’s what happens when you take some risks in games to make things happen, and I think that’s something United need, and he has the mentality to be brave and positive under the big pressure of the shirt.”

That willingness to risk possession to unlock defences is precisely what draws criticism when it goes wrong and adulation when it works. Alderweireld believes Tielemans won’t hide from that responsibility.

“He will put in ultra big effort and say to his team-mates, give me the ball and let me change the game for you. He will take the responsibility to take Manchester United forward.”

Between Mikel’s tactical admiration and Alderweireld’s insight into his character, a clear picture emerges: United haven’t just signed another midfielder. They’ve brought in a playmaker who wants the ball, wants the risk, and wants the burden of making things happen in the most scrutinised shirt in English football.

If £35 million really is a “f*cking steal,” the only question now is how quickly Tielemans turns that price tag into the bargain of the season.
