Manchester United Pursue Barcelona Defender Alejandro Balde

Manchester United have turned their attention to Barcelona defender Alejandro Balde as they step up the search for a new left-back, with the La Liga champions facing a delicate call over one of their brightest academy products.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that United have made contact with Balde’s camp in recent days to explore whether a move away from Catalonia is realistic and on what terms a deal could be done. The approach comes as United line up their next target following the completion of the Baleba deal.

Balde’s situation at Barcelona has grown more complicated over the past year. After an injury-hit 2025/26 campaign, the 20-year-old no longer looks as untouchable as he once did in the club’s long-term plans, especially with competition stiffening on his flank.

The turning point arrived with João Cancelo. Hansi Flick leaned heavily on the Portuguese full-back in the second half of last season, and Cancelo’s permanent return to the club this week has underlined the new hierarchy at left-back. If nothing changes, Balde walks into the new season as second choice.

That dynamic has inevitably alerted Europe’s elite. United, in need of fresh energy and reliability on the left side of their defence, have moved quickly to gauge the landscape. According to Romano, the Premier League club “keep looking for new left back, next priority after Baleba deal,” and have held “calls with Alejandro Balde's camp over last days to understand if exit is possible and conditions.”

For now, one factor works in Barcelona’s favour: Balde is understood to be happy at the club and at the Spotify Camp Nou environment he grew up in. There is no active push from the player’s side to force an exit.

The question is whether Barcelona’s stance shifts if a substantial offer lands on the table and if Balde decides that a season in Cancelo’s shadow is not what he wants at this stage of his career.

United have made their move. The next one belongs to Barcelona – and to Balde himself.
