Willie Kirk returns to English football as Durham head coach, two years after his dismissal from Leicester City Women for breaching the club’s code of conduct over a relationship with a player.

The 48-year-old takes charge of the Women's Championship side with immediate effect, stepping back into the domestic game for the first time since March 2024, when Leicester’s internal investigation concluded he had been in a physical relationship with a player. That relationship broke club rules and cost him his job.

Durham’s announcement focused solely on the future. The club confirmed his appointment but made no reference to his Leicester exit or the circumstances around it, presenting Kirk simply as the man to lead their next chapter in the second tier of the women’s game.

The wider context is impossible to ignore. Personal relationships between players and coaches sit under an increasingly harsh spotlight in women’s football, where concerns about power imbalance, safeguarding and dressing-room dynamics run deep. Critics argue that, even when relationships are consensual and no minors are involved, the inherent authority of a coach over a player can create an unhealthy environment.

Those concerns have shaped the regulatory landscape. Codes of conduct governing behaviour between staff and players are now a condition of securing a Women's Super League licence, with every club required to have a safeguarding officer in place. The structures are designed to protect players, clarify boundaries and give clubs clear mechanisms to act when those boundaries are crossed.

Kirk’s case became one of the most high-profile examples of those mechanisms being enforced. Leicester acted after their investigation, and the coach who had been tasked with steering them away from relegation instead found himself out of work and at the centre of a debate that has only grown louder.

Leading figures in the game have not softened their stance. England manager Sarina Wiegman has previously called player-coach relationships “very inappropriate” and “not healthy”, a blunt assessment that reflects the mood at the top of the sport.

For now, Durham have opted for experience on the touchline without publicly revisiting his past. BBC Sport has contacted the club, as well as the Football Association and the Professional Footballers’ Association, for comment on the appointment and the safeguards around it.

Kirk walks back into the English game with a team to build, a league to navigate, and a spotlight that will not be fixed only on results.
