When Will William Saliba Return? Arsenal Defender’s Recovery Timeline After Back Surgery

After clinching the Premier League title last season, Arsenal aims higher for the 2026/27 campaign. The Gunners kicked off their new season on a high note by beating Manchester City 3-0 in the Community Shield. Despite this strong start, injuries remain a challenge as the team prepares for the months ahead.

Saliba's Injury Details

William Saliba, a key figure in Arsenal's defense and regarded among the world's top center-backs, suffered an aggravated back injury during the World Cup semifinal against Spain while playing for France. Early in that match, he was seen sitting on the ground needing treatment and reportedly told teammates, "my back is gone."

He had been managing this issue throughout the latter part of last season, pushing through pain during both the Premier League run and the Champions League final. The exact nature of his back problem remains unclear, with possibilities including a fracture, slipped disc, or nerve complications.

"I've had some minor niggles for several months," Saliba shared during the World Cup before the injury worsened. "I've been gritting my teeth because there was the Champions League and the Premier League. The World Cup comes around only once every four years, so you've got to grit your teeth. I'm not at 100%, but there are plenty of players who aren't at 100% either. You can't make excuses."

Projected Return Date

No specific comeback date has been confirmed for Saliba following surgery on his back. Earlier reports suggested a potential five-month absence if he chose surgery, but his decision to proceed with the operation might allow for an earlier return. Arsenal's manager, Mikel Arteta, stated Saliba will definitely miss matches up to the September international break, making an October return the earliest possibility. It could stretch beyond that depending on recovery progress.

Arsenal's Defensive Setup Without Saliba

As of mid-August, Arsenal have not signed a replacement for Saliba in the transfer market. Instead, Arteta is relying on existing squad members to fill the void. Backup central defenders Piero Hincapie and Cristhian Mosquera received substantial playing time last season and performed admirably.

In the Community Shield win over Man City on August 16, Mosquera started on the right side of central defense, which might give him an edge due to his preferred positioning. Hincapie, a left-sided defender, provides alternative cover.
