Vozinha, World Cup Star at 40, Joins Colo Colo

Colo Colo are closing in on one of the World Cup’s most unlikely new stars. At 40 years old, Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has reached an agreement to join the Chilean giants, club president Aníbal Mosa confirmed on Friday.

The veteran free agent is expected to travel to Chile in the coming days to undergo his medical before being officially presented at the Estadio Monumental. Only the final formalities remain.

“Vozinha will be a Colo Colo player. In the coming days he will travel to Chile, undergo the usual medical examinations and then be presented here at the Estadio Monumental,” Mosa told reporters ahead of Colo Colo’s league match against Deportes Limache.

Those displays earned him a place in FIFA’s fan-selected World Cup dream team, a remarkable accolade for a player who had just left Portuguese second-tier side Chaves before the tournament began.

Mosa made it clear that such performances justified the move on sporting grounds, while openly acknowledging the commercial upside for Colo Colo. A World Cup cult hero in goal, with global recognition and a compelling backstory, is a rare marketing gift in South American football.
