Arsenal have moved aggressively for Vinicius Junior, but the Brazilian’s heart is still at the Bernabeu.
The Premier League champions, fresh from ending a 22-year title drought and coming within a penalty shootout of winning the Champions League, are pushing to add a genuine superstar to Mikel Arteta’s attack this summer. Their first big swing – a move for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers – ended with Chelsea paying £117m to take the attacking midfielder to west London, a figure Arsenal simply refused to match.
So the crosshairs have shifted to Madrid – and to a player who, on talent alone, fits perfectly with Arsenal’s new status.
Arsenal push hard for Vinicius
With just a year left on his Real Madrid contract, Vinicius has inevitably attracted interest from Europe’s elite. Arsenal, newly crowned English champions and desperate to turn domestic dominance into European rule, see an opportunity.
On Friday, the well-followed Arsenal-focused X account HandofArsenal claimed the Gunners had reached an agreement in principle on personal terms with Vinicius ahead of a potential summer move. The account described a “monstrous offer” being prepared by Roc Nation to take into negotiations with Real Madrid on behalf of the winger, adding that “the ball is in Vini Jnr’s court”.
The suggestion was clear: Arsenal are ready to pay, the player is open, and it’s now about whether Madrid will blink.
But just as the story began to build in north London, a different message emerged from Spain.
Vinicius still leaning towards Madrid
Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke has poured cold water on the idea that Vinicius is already halfway out of the door. Speaking on the outlet’s podcast, O’Rourke underlined the scale of the challenge facing Arsenal.
“It’s going to be a difficult deal to do, there’s no getting away from that. Real Madrid don’t really want to lose Vinicius Junior,” he said, adding that he has been told the Brazilian “ideally would like to renew his contract at Real Madrid”.
That line matters. It cuts against the idea of a player agitating for a move and instead paints a picture of a star who sees his future, first and foremost, in white.
Arsenal, though, are not turning away. They are “exploring the possibility” that a departure could become realistic, fully aware that a world-class, Champions League-proven wide forward of Vinicius’ profile would instantly elevate an already formidable squad.
This is the kind of signing that changes not just a team sheet, but a club’s global weight.
Real’s hard stance – but a clear deadline
Behind the scenes, the clock is ticking. According to TEAMtalk, Real Madrid are unwilling to let Vinicius drift into the final stretch of his contract without clarity.
Their information is that Real do not want to “risk Vinicius entering the final year of his contract without an agreement in place”. If no breakthrough is reached, the club would prefer to sanction a sale this summer rather than watch one of their most valuable assets walk away for nothing in 2027.
That is the tension point. Vinicius wants to stay. Real want him to stay. But Real also want control – and they will not surrender it lightly.
As the window unfolds, Arsenal wait, armed with money, a title-winning project, and the promise of a starring role in a team still hungry for more. Real Madrid hold the contract and the history. Vinicius holds the decision.
