UEFA Introduces Swiss Format for European Qualifiers and Nations League

International football is on the brink of a major change. UEFA will approve in Thessaloniki the use of the Swiss format, which is already applied in the club Champions League, for both the Nations League and qualification rounds for World Cups and European Championships starting from 2028, according to AS.

A 36-Team League Structure

The traditional group stage will be replaced by a league featuring 36 national teams. Each team will face six matches — half at home and half away — against opponents of varying skill levels. This approach aims to reduce predictable outcomes and boost the appeal and value of broadcast rights.

Calendar Changes and Venue Announcement

FIFA plans to introduce double international windows, allowing each national team to play four games within a 15-day period. Additionally, it has been confirmed that Camp Nou will host the 2029 Champions League final.
