Tottenham Targets Cody Gakpo to Reshape Attack

Tottenham are lining up a bold reshaping of their attack, and Cody Gakpo has moved to the front of the stage.

After pouring £237m into Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali earlier in the window, plus sharp free-agent moves for Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, Spurs have rebuilt the spine. The next job is clear: inject star quality into the wide areas.

Savinho lined up on the right

On the right flank, the plan is already well advanced. Savinho has told Manchester City he wants out and has given the green light to a move to north London. Negotiations between the clubs have been ongoing, with the expectation that a deal can be struck for a package in the region of £60m.

That would tick one major box for Ange Postecoglou. The other was supposed to be Eli Junior Kroupi.

Spurs were, according to TEAMtalk, less than 24 hours away from lodging their first bid for the Bournemouth forward when disaster struck. A fractured metatarsal, surgery, and a three-to-four-month lay-off later, the move is off the table for this summer. A flexible attacker who could play wide and through the middle had slipped away.

So Tottenham have turned their gaze to Anfield.

Gakpo emerges as leading contender

Cody Gakpo has long been on recruitment radars across Europe. Now, as Fabrizio Romano recently flagged, he is one to watch specifically for Spurs in the coming weeks.

“Keep an eye on Tottenham Hotspur and Cody Gakpo in the next weeks. They really like the player,” Romano said via Men in Blazers, a line that tallies with the growing noise around the deal.

Journalist Paul O’Keefe went a step further on Saturday, reporting on X that Gakpo is “now a leading contender as Tottenham look to add to their attacking options.” For a club that wants versatility and end product across the front line, the fit is obvious.

Gakpo operates primarily off the left, where he can drive inside and attack the box, but Liverpool have also used him as a central striker. That dual role mirrors exactly what Tottenham had hoped to gain from Kroupi: a forward who can shift between the flank and the No. 9 position without disrupting the system.

Liverpool set a heavyweight price

There is, of course, a cost. And Liverpool have not lowballed their valuation.

Anfield Watch report that the Reds have set Gakpo’s asking price at £72m (€85m). The benchmark? Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona, which Liverpool have used as a reference point for their own negotiations.

For Tottenham, that figure turns this from a smart opportunity into a statement decision. Pay it, and they walk away from the window with Savinho on one side and Gakpo on the other, two big-ticket wide men to bolt onto a squad already reinforced in goal, defence and midfield.

Decline to match Liverpool’s number, and they risk watching a prime target stay on Merseyside or move elsewhere while the clock ticks down.

Spurs have already shown they are willing to spend to reshape this squad in one summer. The question now is simple: how much is that final attacking piece really worth to them?
