Tottenham Acquire Brazil Winger Savinho from Manchester City for £75m

Tottenham Hotspur have finalized the signing of Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City for an initial fee of £75 million. The 22-year-old has committed to a long-term deal with Spurs, who may pay up to an additional £10 million depending on add-ons.

This transfer follows over a year of negotiations. Tottenham had previously attempted to sign him last summer, but Savinho chose to stay at the Etihad Stadium. Despite this, his opportunities under Pep Guardiola were scarce last season, as he started just seven Premier League matches.

"It has taken some time, but I am very happy to be here," Savinho said. "It's a fantastic chance at a great club led by one of the best managers globally. When I spoke to the head coach, I felt I had to join. He expressed his desire to help me reach my highest potential, and I believe we can achieve that together, as a team."

Savinho arrived at City in 2024 from French club Troyes for £30.8 million. During his time at Manchester City, he appeared 84 times, scoring seven goals and assisting 16. His move to Spurs comes amid a busy summer, with Tottenham also signing Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, and Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton, collectively spending around £312 million. Free transfers include defenders Marcos Senesi, Andrew Robertson, and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Roberto De Zerbi commented on Savinho's arrival: "He brings energy, creativity, and quality on the wings. He's brave when attacking defenders and can change matches with his inventiveness."

Meanwhile, Manchester City continue advanced talks to transfer Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush to Tottenham, with sources suggesting a strong possibility of completion before the September 1 deadline.

Savinho’s Impact and Playing Style

Last season saw a reduction in Savinho's involvement at City after the mid-season signing of winger Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth. He accumulated 821 Premier League minutes, netting one goal and assisting once, playing only 31% of City’s total minutes across competitions—a drop from 54% the previous year.

Despite reduced playtime, his 2024-25 stats justified Tottenham’s investment. He delivered eight Premier League assists from open play in limited minutes (1,773), ranking fifth overall in open-play assists. Per 90 minutes, only Mohamed Salah outperformed him in chance creation, with Savinho producing 2.2 chances per game and registering 0.41 assists.

His strength lies in carrying the ball forward. Among players with at least 1,000 minutes, only Jeremy Doku made more progressive carries over 10 meters per 90 minutes (6.8). Savinho also topped the league for carries followed by creating chances, averaging 1.3 per 90. Only Son Heung-min provided assists more frequently after a carry. He completed 2.6 dribbles per 90 minutes with a 51% success rate, often drawing defenders before releasing teammates.

During his breakthrough season at Girona in La Liga (2023-24), Savinho played 2,989 minutes, mainly on the left wing (65%). He scored nine goals and assisted eight, gaining a reputation as one of Spain's most dangerous one-on-one attackers.

At Manchester City, his role shifted toward the right flank, where he played 36% of his minutes compared to 20% on the left, highlighting his flexibility—a useful trait for Spurs.
