Tottenham's Midfield Rebuild: Key Targets and Strategies
Tottenham’s midfield rebuild is starting to look less like a tweak and more like a full-scale refit.
Roberto De Zerbi has made the centre of the pitch the club’s summer battleground, and the names on his list tell their own story: Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and now Bournemouth’s rising playmaker Alex Scott. Three different profiles, one clear message – Spurs want control, personality and depth in the heart of their team.
Tonali chase sets the tone
Tonali has become the headline act of this window for Tottenham. The Newcastle midfielder is viewed inside the club as a cornerstone signing, the kind of statement addition that can drag a side up a level on his own.
Talks with the Italy international’s camp have been ongoing throughout June, with indications that Tonali is open to the move if the clubs can find common ground. That is the problem. Newcastle are understood to value him at around £100 million. Tottenham’s opening offer, believed to be in the region of £80m, was swiftly rejected by the Magpies.
The size of that first bid underlines how serious Spurs are. This is not a speculative enquiry. Tonali sits at the top of their midfield shortlist, and his name has framed the entire summer strategy in north London.
He is not alone there.
Mateus Fernandes: the other major play
While the Tonali saga rumbles in the background, Tottenham have been working a second big midfield track with West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.
The Portugal international has just come off an impressive campaign in east London and has drawn admiring glances from across the division. Spurs are among the most persistent. Multiple reports suggest they have already made significant progress on the player’s side, with some claiming Fernandes is edging towards agreement on personal terms.
The club’s dialogue with West Ham has also moved beyond the polite introduction stage. According to The Independent, positive talks have taken place over a deal that could climb to around £85 million. For a direct rival, that is a hefty number and a bold move.
Those negotiations, coupled with the Tonali pursuit, show just how aggressively De Zerbi wants to upgrade his midfield options. This is not about one marquee arrival. It is about reshaping the core of his team.
Dubravka deal shows wider squad shift
While the spotlight has fallen on the middle of the park, Tottenham have not stood still elsewhere.
The club have already brought in Martin Dubravka on a free transfer after his exit from Burnley. The experienced goalkeeper, who previously enjoyed a long stint at Newcastle before his season at Turf Moor, joins to add depth and competition in goal.
It is a quieter piece of business, but it fits the broader picture: De Zerbi is turning over the squad, position by position, looking for reliability and experience to underpin his more ambitious moves.
And still, the search for midfield talent continues.
Alex Scott: the one Bournemouth refuse to lose
The latest name on Tottenham’s radar is Alex Scott, one of Bournemouth’s key figures and one of the most coveted young midfielders in the Premier League.
Sky Sports report that Spurs are among several clubs targeting the 22-year-old, who has grown into a central pillar for the Cherries since his move from Bristol City. Across the last two seasons he has become the heartbeat of their midfield, his development tracked closely by the league’s biggest clubs.
Tottenham are not alone. Arsenal and Manchester United have already tested the waters with initial enquiries for a player valued at around £60 million. Both were rebuffed.
Bournemouth’s stance is blunt. They do not want to sell Scott in this window. Club officials have made that clear to all interested parties. Rather than preparing for a record departure, they are working on a new contract and a long-term plan built around him.
Talks over fresh terms have already started, with Bournemouth hopeful that Scott will continue his rise under newly appointed head coach Marco Rose. Keeping him, not cashing in, remains their preferred outcome.
A midfielder on every shortlist
Scott’s reputation has continued to climb despite his omission from England’s World Cup squad this summer. He was reportedly under strong consideration before being left out of the final group, but his club form has ensured his name stays in the thoughts of elite sides.
For Tottenham, he represents a different kind of opportunity. Tonali brings hardened experience, Fernandes offers proven Premier League quality with a powerful edge, while Scott is the younger, developmental play – already influential, yet still with room to grow.
Three targets, three different routes to the same destination.
Spurs have made their intentions unmistakable. They want a new engine room, and they are prepared to fight rival giants and stubborn selling clubs to get it. The only question now is which of these midfield battles they actually win – and how different De Zerbi’s side will look when the window finally shuts.
