Deciding which football team is the best worldwide is no easy task. Wins and trophies offer some clues, but since teams from different leagues rarely face each other, comparing them is tricky. For example, Manchester United has never played against Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr, so guessing who would win is tough. To help with this, Opta uses an Elo-based system that analyzes over 2.5 million matches to rank teams based on league results, division strength, country rating, and continental level.

Below is a list of the top 30 football teams according to these rankings as of June 1, 2026, alongside their recent performances and reasons for their positions.

Teams Ranked 30th to 21st

Starting at number 30 is Tottenham Hotspur, who barely escaped relegation in the Premier League. They follow Juventus (29th) and Everton (28th). The Portuguese champions FC Porto sit 25th with a 90.5 rating, tied with Napoli and Crystal Palace. Napoli dismissed Antonio Conte after failing to keep their Serie A title, while Crystal Palace recently celebrated winning the UEFA Conference League during their most successful era.

Fulham ranks 24th after another steady season, joined by Roma, Belgian champions Club Brugge, and German side Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen ended sixth in the Bundesliga but had a solid overall year.

Benfica stands 17th after an unbeaten season in Portugal. Brentford had a commendable year despite key departures, ranking 16th, just below Sporting CP. Three more Premier League teams feature: Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Bournemouth, separated by Borussia Dortmund in 12th place.
