Tielemans Left Out of United Squad for Atletico Test
Youri Tielemans’ first touch in a Manchester United shirt will not come in Oslo. The £35m summer signing has been left out of the travelling squad to face Atletico Madrid this afternoon, his debut delayed a little longer as Michael Carrick leans on familiarity rather than fanfare.
The Belgian, a marquee arrival from Aston Villa, only linked up with his new teammates at Carrington after taking a short break following the World Cup. United have decided not to rush him, keeping him back in Manchester while the rest of the squad head out for their third friendly of the summer.
Carrick, unlike many managers in pre-season, has resisted the temptation to rip things up from game to game. Between the outings against Wrexham and Rosenborg he has tweaked, not overhauled, and the pattern continues here. The message is clear: this is about building a team, not a tour.
Tielemans’ absence should not be read as caution over his role. If anything, the way Carrick has handled his senior players suggests the opposite. Established names have been handed meaningful minutes rather than token run-outs, hinting that the Belgian could walk straight into the starting XI within days of meeting his new colleagues.
He has been training alongside fellow countryman Senne Lammens, another who has not travelled. That likely opens the door for Radek Vitek to keep his place in goal, rewarded for his recent involvement while the new arrival beds in.
In front of him, Carrick appears to have settled on what looks very much like his preferred Premier League back four: Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Ayden Heaven and Luke Shaw. It is an early statement of intent, a defensive line given time to grow together rather than shuffled for the sake of it.
The midfield shape is equally telling. Mason Mount will sit alongside Andrey Santos at the base, a pairing designed to control tempo and launch attacks quickly. Their presence gives Shea Lacey the licence to stay high as the No10, a role he has begun to make his own in pre-season.
Out wide, Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu will provide the width and running, with Joshua Zirkzee trusted to lead the line. It is a front four with movement and variety, and one that will be tested by Atletico’s trademark edge and organisation.
There are absentees beyond Tielemans. Tyler Fredricson will not feature again after his midweek move to Lausanne-Sport, while Benjamin Sesko is still believed to be managing a shin injury and may sit this one out as United avoid unnecessary risks.
Opportunity, though, sits on the bench. Ethan Williams, Jacob Devaney and Harry Amass all scored in cameos against Rosenborg and will be desperate for another chance to catch the eye. Pre-season can change careers in 20 minutes; they know it.
So Tielemans waits. His debut is on hold, the anticipation building rather than fading. While he watches from afar, Carrick’s core begins to take shape. When the Belgian finally steps into it, he will be joining a side that already looks like it knows where it is going.
