Thomas Partey Joins Al Shabab on One-Year Deal
Thomas Partey has signed for Saudi Pro League side Al Shabab on a one-year contract, ending a brief spell as a free agent after leaving Villarreal.
The 33-year-old midfielder became available in June when Villarreal confirmed they would not be renewing his deal, less than a year after he arrived in Spain on a free transfer following the expiry of his Arsenal contract.
Al Shabab confirmed his arrival with a short message on their official X account on Friday, posting a graphic with the caption: “Just feels right” as they unveiled their latest high-profile addition.
From Atletico to Arsenal to Saudi Arabia
Partey’s move marks the latest step in a career that has taken him from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal, then on to Villarreal and now the Middle East.
He joined Arsenal from Atletico in October 2020 and spent five years in north London, a period that included both injury frustration and spells where he became a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s midfield. When his deal ran down, Arsenal opted not to extend, allowing him to leave on a free and return to La Liga with Villarreal last summer.
That reunion with Spanish football lasted just a single season. With Villarreal choosing not to offer fresh terms, Partey again found himself on the market — and Al Shabab moved in.
Stacked with familiar European faces
Partey will not be short of familiar company in Riyadh.
He links up with former Atletico Madrid teammate Yannick Carrasco, who has been one of Al Shabab’s headline names. Former Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill is also on the books after ending a five-year stay at Turf Moor to join the White Lions last year.
The squad carries a strong European flavour. Tin Jedvaj, Daniel Podence, Vincent Sierro and Yacine Adli are among the other players with substantial European experience now wearing Al Shabab colours.
On the touchline, Thomas Letsch has recently taken over as head coach, tasked with welding this collection of imported talent into a side capable of pushing higher up the Saudi Pro League table. Partey’s arrival adds a seasoned international with Champions League and Premier League experience to that project.
World Cup stage and legal cloud
On the pitch, Partey remains an important figure for Ghana. He started three of the Black Stars’ four matches at the 2026 World Cup, anchoring midfield on the biggest stage once again.
He missed Ghana’s group game against Panama after his visa application was refused. Under Canadian law, foreign nationals can be deemed inadmissible even without a conviction, a rule that came into sharp focus because of his ongoing legal situation in the United Kingdom.
Partey has been charged with seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in London, relating to alleged incidents between 2020 and 2022. The charges involve three women. He has pleaded not guilty and consistently denied all allegations.
A trial at Southwark Crown Court was initially scheduled for November 2026. That date has now been pushed back, with proceedings due to begin on June 8, 2027.
So Partey arrives in Saudi Arabia with a wealth of experience, a fresh contract, and a major court case looming on the horizon — a complex backdrop as he begins the next chapter of his career with Al Shabab.
