Aurelien Tchouameni spent last season looking like the adult in the room in a Real Madrid midfield that too often lost its way. Calm on the ball, ruthless without it, he was one of the few who emerged with credit from a disjointed campaign.
Now he finds himself at the centre of a very different story: a potential exit from the Bernabeu in the middle of Jose Mourinho’s rebuild.

United ready a five-year pitch
According to Jose Felix Diaz, speaking on Ruben Martin’s livestream, United are prepared to put serious money on the table and hand Tchouameni a five-year contract to anchor their midfield at Old Trafford.
This was not the original plan. United’s first choice had been Mateus Fernandes, but the Portuguese midfielder slipped through their fingers, completing a move to Tottenham from West Ham. That miss has sharpened the focus. Attention has swung firmly to Madrid and to Tchouameni.
Initial contacts over what would be one of the standout deals of the window are expected in the coming days. The intent is clear: United want a new midfield leader, and they see Tchouameni as that figure.
Stay and fight in Madrid, or lead in Manchester?
From Madrid’s side, the situation is delicate. Tchouameni was one of their better performers last season and, crucially, he wants to stay. He sees himself at the Bernabeu, part of the next iteration of Los Blancos’ midfield.
But the landscape is shifting. Madrid are exploring the market for another central midfielder, with Enzo Fernandez identified as a prime target. If Fernandez arrives, the internal competition grows fiercer, and the question of roles and hierarchy returns.
At United, the pitch is different. He would walk into a team crying out for authority in the middle of the pitch, with the promise of greater prominence and responsibility in the Premier League. That kind of status is hard to ignore, even for a player attached to Madrid.
For now, his focus is more immediate. Tchouameni is working to regain full fitness after a knock picked up before France’s Round of 16 tie against Paraguay. His place against Morocco is in doubt, with Manu Kone on standby to step in.

Arbeloa turns to Madrid as he shapes Fulham project
While United look to Madrid for a potential marquee signing, another familiar Bernabeu figure is doing the same for very different reasons.
Alvaro Arbeloa, the former Real Madrid defender and coach, has taken over at Fulham and is already eyeing a trio of players from his old club to launch his Premier League project.
Franco Mastantuono, Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia are all on his list.
As reported by Nizaar Kinsella on BBC Sport, Arbeloa wants to bring the three to Craven Cottage after agreeing a three-year deal with Fulham. The plan on the table is specific: one loan, two permanent moves.
Three names, three different situations
Fulham’s idea is to sign Mastantuono on loan, while pursuing permanent transfers for Fran Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia. It is a strategy rooted in Arbeloa’s familiarity with Madrid’s academy and squad. He knows the profiles, the personalities, the potential.
For a manager trying to stamp his identity on a new dressing room, trusted players can accelerate everything.
Madrid, though, cannot treat the three cases as a package. Each comes with its own context and consequences.
Fran Garcia is the most advanced. He has been strongly linked with Real Betis, with a €4 million deal already moving forward and close to completion. The arrival of Marc Cucurella and the presence of Alvaro Carreras have effectively closed the door on regular minutes for Fran at the Bernabeu. A permanent exit feels like a matter of timing rather than debate.
Gonzalo Garcia and Mastantuono are different. Both are currently in Mourinho’s plans, at least through pre-season. The Portuguese coach wants to see them up close before any decision is made on their futures.
A loan for Mastantuono could make sense if Madrid believe his immediate opportunities will be limited. Regular Premier League football at Fulham would offer a demanding stage and a chance to accelerate his development.
Selling Gonzalo, however, is another level of commitment. Letting go of a talented young forward would need to be justified not only financially but also in terms of squad depth and long-term planning.
Madrid’s balancing act
For Real Madrid, Fulham’s interest is as much an opportunity as it is a test. Having a trusted former player willing to take on talents whose futures are uncertain can help ease difficult decisions. But each move carries a different weight.
Loaning Mastantuono would be a calculated gamble on development. Allowing Fran Garcia to leave would tidy up a crowded position. Selling Gonzalo Garcia would be a statement about how Madrid see their attacking line evolving.
On one side, United push for Tchouameni and the chance to reshape their midfield around him. On the other, Arbeloa waits in London, ready to offer minutes and responsibility to Madrid’s next wave.
How Madrid respond to both pressures will say a lot about what kind of squad Mourinho wants to build—and which young talents will be allowed to chase their futures away from the Bernabeu.
