Tchouameni Commits to Real Madrid: Impact on Manchester United's Plans
José Mourinho has not taken long to leave his mark on Real Madrid’s summer – and Manchester United are already feeling it.
Barely a month after the Portuguese coach walked back through the doors at the Bernabéu, Aurélien Tchouameni has committed his future to Madrid, shutting down one of United’s most ambitious midfield pursuits of the window.
Tchouameni shuts the door
At 26, Tchouameni has reportedly signed on for another five years in the Spanish capital, a clear statement from both player and club. United had been circling, sensing an opportunity amid whispers that Madrid might be tempted to cash in on the former Monaco midfielder.
That chance has gone.
RMC Sport reports that Tchouameni was adamant he wanted to stay, even as approaches came in – with United the most serious among them. For Madrid, tying him down again was treated as a priority, not a luxury. Any notion of him being expendable has been firmly parked.
Mourinho, back in charge and already reshaping the squad, will now build with Tchouameni at the heart of his midfield. Of Madrid’s four signings this summer, only one is a midfielder, and even that arrival – Bernardo Silva – is not a direct rival for Tchouameni’s holding role. The Frenchman’s place in the spine of the side looks as secure as it has ever been.
United’s midfield puzzle
The timing of the news will sting at Old Trafford.
Within hours of reports of Tchouameni’s new deal emerging, United had finalised a £50million agreement with Chelsea for Andrey Santos, who is due to undergo a medical today. The Brazilian is one of several midfielders the club have tracked in recent weeks, alongside Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Felix Nmecha and Sander Berge.
Ederson is also set for a medical now that Brazil’s World Cup campaign is over, another piece in a rapidly evolving recruitment drive.
Would Santos’ arrival have ended United’s interest in Tchouameni anyway? Inside the club, that question remains unanswered. What is clear is that United had planned for multiple midfield reinforcements even before Manuel Ugarte suffered an injury at the World Cup. That setback has only heightened the urgency.
Right now, Kobbie Mainoo stands as their only fully fit central midfielder. Moves for Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes were explored, but United were ultimately priced out of both. The hunt has become a juggling act: budget, availability, and a shrinking pool of elite options.
Tchouameni was the kind of signing that could have anchored the entire rebuild. Instead, he has chosen to be Mourinho’s cornerstone.
Madrid draw their lines
While Madrid have locked in one midfielder, they have been just as decisive about who they are not chasing.
Speculation over a move for Enzo Fernández grew loud enough that the club took the rare step of issuing an official statement. In it, Madrid categorically denied any attempt – direct or indirect – to sign the Chelsea and Argentina midfielder, stressing they had no intention of pursuing such a deal.
The wording was sharp, deliberate. Madrid spoke of their “utmost respect” for Fernández and for Chelsea, highlighting the “excellent institutional relationship” between the clubs and insisting the rumours were “unfounded” and “do not reflect reality”. The club also expressed regret that such stories “only serve to create confusion among fans and unnecessarily harm the entities and individuals involved.”
In a single week, Madrid have effectively redrawn the map of the midfield market: Tchouameni stays, Fernández is off the table, and Mourinho’s squad is beginning to take on a familiar, ruthless clarity.
United, by contrast, are still piecing theirs together. They have money on the table, targets in motion and a manager who needs bodies in the middle of the pitch. But the elite tier is narrowing fast.
