Summer Transfer Window: Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United Strategies

The summer transfer window is starting to snarl.

Across Europe’s elite, phones are lit, agents are circling and plans are being ripped up and rewritten as quickly as names flash across the ticker. Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham are all deep in the scramble – and the picture is changing by the hour.

Arsenal: Vinicius dream dies, Guimaraes and Alvarez define a new plan

Arsenal’s grand pursuit of Vinicius Jr is over. The Brazilian has nailed his colours to Real Madrid until 2032, closing the door on what would have been the headline move of the summer in north London.

The response at the Emirates has been swift. Mikel Arteta has moved on to a new trio of attacking targets: Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Iliman Ndiaye. Three very different forwards, one clear message – Arsenal are not backing off.

Alvarez is the name that won’t go away. Having missed out on Morgan Rogers, Arsenal are expected to reignite their push for the Argentina international, with reports on X claiming personal terms over a contract are already in place. The Article report that Alvarez would prefer Barcelona but has not ruled out a Premier League return. If Arsenal can turn that into a deal, the knock-on effect for Viktor Gyokeres could be significant.

Barcola is another live option, but an expensive one. PSG’s valuation of around £130m is miles above Arsenal’s view of the 23-year-old, and Liverpool have already stolen a march in talks. Ndiaye remains on the list as a more attainable alternative.

While the forward hunt rumbles on, the Gunners have landed the midfielder they wanted. Newcastle have effectively confirmed Bruno Guimaraes’ move to Arsenal, with an official announcement now only a matter of timing. The fee is understood to be around £75m, potentially rising to £80m, making the Brazilian the third arrival of the summer after Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis.

Newcastle chief executive David Hopkinson has already hinted that Arsenal pushed hard to lower the price, but in the end paid up. Guimaraes gives Arteta the high-class, press-resistant presence he has craved in the middle of the pitch. Arsenal missed on Vinicius Jr, but they have not missed on ambition.

The search for the next big thing has also taken them to Italy. Arsenal, along with Manchester United, have been scouting Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito. The Sun report both clubs sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old in pre-season, with Arsenal tracking him for several months. Inter publicly describe Esposito as “untouchable”, yet privately are understood to have set an asking price of around £73m. The player is said to be very open to a Premier League move. Another bidding war is brewing.

Manchester United: left-back frustration, Esposito intrigue

At Old Trafford, the focus is more pragmatic. Manchester United are desperate for a new left-back and have been forced into a rethink.

Lewis Hall was the preferred option, but Newcastle have ruled out a sale. United have admitted defeat there and turned their attention to Jorge Salinas as they try to plug a glaring gap in the squad before the season bites.

Behind that immediate need sits a more glamorous project. United are in the same queue as Arsenal for Pio Esposito, having also sent scouts to watch the young Inter forward. If Inter do open the door, the Premier League’s two biggest rebuilds could go head-to-head for the same striker.

Manchester City: Rodri questions, Enzo answers?

While others chase forwards, Manchester City are wrestling with the prospect of losing their midfield metronome.

Barcelona have already seen a £38.6m bid for Rodri rejected, with City valuing the Spain international closer to £68.5m. Standard Sport understands the Premier League champions consider the opening offer so far below their valuation that they do not even see it as a starting point for serious talks. Barcelona are expected to return with a second bid, but they will need to go far higher to even get City to the table.

City are not waiting around. Gianluca Di Marzio reports that they have launched a move for Enzo Fernandez as a potential replacement for the Barcelona‑bound Rodri and are working on two midfield additions alongside the signing of Elliot Anderson. Enzo Maresca is keen on a reunion with his former vice-captain, though prising Fernandez away will be complicated and costly.

City are also keen on Ayyoub Bouaddi, who impressed during the recent World Cup with Morocco, and talks over the youngster are already underway. The champions are planning for every scenario.

Chelsea: arrivals, but eyes on the exit door

Chelsea’s window is once again a balancing act.

Pep Chavarria is set to arrive, adding depth to the squad, but the bigger story is at the top end of the market. Manchester City’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez threatens to strip Chelsea of one of their most technically gifted midfielders.

Pedro Neto is another who could depart, with City also circling. Chelsea’s owners have not been shy about trading aggressively, and if City come hard for both Fernandez and Neto, Mauricio Pochettino’s squad could look very different by the end of August.

Liverpool: Araujo shock, Barcola battle

Anfield has produced the twist of the day. Liverpool have agreed a shock deal to sign Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona.

According to widespread reports, the Reds have struck a season-long arrangement with the LaLiga champions for their captain, with an option to buy next summer if the 27-year-old impresses. Fabrizio Romano reports that a verbal agreement is in place and the move has been approved by Deco. For a club managing a defensive injury crisis, it is a bold and timely move.

But Liverpool are not done at the top of the pitch. They are pushing hard for Bradley Barcola, with Sky Sports reporting that talks with PSG have already taken place. The problem is the numbers. There remains a significant gap in valuation, with PSG demanding a substantial fee for the France international.

The pressure is on. Arsenal are monitoring Barcola and could yet attempt to hijack Liverpool’s move as they hunt their own Vinicius alternative. Liverpool remain keen on the 23-year-old to bolster their attack, but they will have to decide how far they are prepared to go in a market that has already gone wild.

Tottenham: new contract, new striker hunt

Across north London, Tottenham are spreading the net wide for firepower.

Micky van de Ven has agreed a new contract, a crucial piece of business at the back, and attention has quickly shifted to the other end of the pitch. Spurs are working on a deal for Villarreal striker Georges Mikautadze, with the Georgia international on their shortlist as they look to deepen their attacking options.

Mikautadze has impressed since his €30m move to Villarreal last summer, and his profile fits the aggressive, front-foot football Ange Postecoglou wants. But he is not the only name on the list. Cody Gakpo and Savinho are also of interest as Tottenham cast their net across Europe in search of the right blend of goals and versatility.

The window is moving into its decisive stretch. Guimaraes is heading for Arsenal, Araujo is on his way to Liverpool, Barcelona are coming back for Rodri and Manchester City are closing in on Enzo Fernandez. Somewhere inside that storm, one deal will flip the market again – and every club knows it could be theirs.
