Shay Given Says Chelsea Would Seize Chance to Sign Jordan Pickford if He Shows Interest
Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given thinks Chelsea would quickly move to sign Jordan Pickford, the Everton and England goalkeeper, if he showed any sign of wanting a transfer. The 32-year-old has been a key figure at Everton since his £25 million move from Sunderland in 2017.
Pickford's Long Service at Everton
Pickford is entering his tenth season at Goodison Park, boasting 358 appearances and 100 clean sheets for Everton. His contract runs until June 2029, yet despite his consistent performances, transfer rumors have remained scarce.
Given Surprised by Lack of Transfer Talk
"Jordan Pickford has been at Everton for nearly 10 years now and he’s been England number one for most of that time too and he broke the appearance record for England World Cup games. It is strange that we haven’t heard of other clubs moving in for him during that time," Given told BOYLE Sports.
He added that maybe Pickford is well settled at Everton or perhaps offers have never surfaced publicly. Given also remarked on the typical summer activity involving goalkeepers but pointed out Pickford’s age, only 32, means he likely has several strong years ahead.
"You’d think Chelsea would be on the phone tomorrow and jump at the chance to sign him if he gave them any encouragement," said Given.
Pickford’s Quality Praised
Given highlighted some of Pickford’s remarkable saves, including a memorable stop against Sandro Tonali at St James Park last season. He described Pickford as a "Steady Eddie," meaning reliable and consistent rather than flashy.
"When you’ve got a goalkeeper who is that steady, it’s a real plus, and he’s got a real personality. Some people say it can spill over at times, but it shows his passion and hunger and desire for the team to do well. It’s his will to win, you can’t coach that or teach it. It’s just who he is," Given explained.
Pickford’s Loyalty to Everton
Despite speculation, Pickford has shown strong loyalty to Everton. After a game against Brentford last April, he expressed his fondness for the club and fans.
"Everton’s been so good to me, and I’ve been so good to Everton, we’ve got a great relationship. I love the fans, the fanbase is quality. I’ve got the best chant that Everton fans sing. It takes some doing to get an Everton chant, let me tell you that," Pickford said.
Looking Ahead to the New Season
Everton will begin their 2026–27 Premier League season with a home match against Crystal Palace on August 22. Pickford’s experience and quick reflexes will remain crucial for Everton’s defence as they face a challenging schedule.
