Sao Paulo Eyes Free Transfer for Jamie Vardy After Cremonese Exit

Sao Paulo are exploring the possibility of signing former Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy after his contract with Cremonese expired this summer. The 39-year-old forward, now a free agent, is currently evaluating his next steps after returning to England. The Brazilian club has made an initial approach as they weigh up offering Vardy a deal.

Club Leadership Discusses Potential Move

The Brazilian giants have reportedly shown early interest in bringing Vardy back into competitive football following his stint in Italy. Journalist Fabrizio Romano first reported the potential transfer, which ESPN Brazil later confirmed. Vardy scored seven goals in 29 appearances for Cremonese during a season that ended with the club relegated to Serie B.

While official talks have not yet started, Sao Paulo's board is debating the opportunity. Some members see Vardy as a player who remains in excellent physical and technical form, capable of bringing a winning mentality to the squad. Others are cautious due to the financial implications and the striker nearing 40 years old in January.

Vardy Weighs New Challenge Amidst Legacy

The move comes as Sao Paulo aims to strengthen their attack, led by Jonathan Calleri, who recently extended his contract through 2028. For Vardy, it could represent a fresh challenge after his celebrated career at Leicester where he scored 200 goals across 500 games over 13 seasons. He played a key role in Leicester's legendary 2015-16 Premier League title-winning season with 24 goals.

Since finishing his time in Italy, Vardy has returned to England and launched a podcast with former teammate Wes Morgan titled "Jamie Vardy’s Having A Party." He made it clear he has no intention of playing again for Leicester and will support the club from the stands.

Sao Paulo's Attack Needs Reinforcement

If Vardy decides to join Sao Paulo, he would arrive midway through the Brazilian Serie A season, with the club currently positioned 13th after 22 matches. Their frontline has struggled, scoring only five goals in the last six games and lacking sharpness since May. Bringing in a seasoned scorer like Vardy is seen as a potential boost to improve the attack and climb the league standings.
