Guglielmo Vicario Joins Juventus on Loan from Tottenham
Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario is heading back to Italy, with Juventus winning the race for the under-pressure goalkeeper after Fabrizio Romano delivered his trademark “here we go” confirmation.
The deal, agreed between the clubs overnight, will see Vicario move to Turin on loan with an option to buy. Crucially, that clause is not mandatory, giving Juventus flexibility and Spurs a potential escape route if his form suddenly revives elsewhere.
This transfer has been coming. By the end of last season it was obvious Vicario’s time in north London was running out. His campaign never really caught fire, and he became one of several Tottenham players who struggled badly as the club lurched alarmingly close to the drop. Spurs survived relegation by just two points on the final day, a brush with disaster that has triggered sweeping changes.
Vicario’s own season ended early when he underwent hernia surgery in March. Antonin Kinsky stepped in and held the gloves, a clear sign of the direction of travel. From that moment, a summer exit felt inevitable.
Juventus, meanwhile, had been hunting a new No.1 and initially pushed hard for Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa. That pursuit collapsed, and the Old Lady pivoted sharply. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Juve had become “serious” about Vicario, and the pace of talks quickly backed that up.
Di Marzio detailed how negotiations between the clubs accelerated, with both sides working on a structure that suited everyone: a loan with an option to buy, Juventus getting their new keeper without a huge immediate outlay, Tottenham respecting the player’s desire to return to Serie A.
The pressure around the deal cranked up another notch when Vicario’s agent arrived in Turin. Officially, he was in the city to work on a move for Jhon Lucumí, but he stayed to sit down with Juventus executives and push Vicario’s transfer towards the finish line. From there, it was only a matter of ironing out the final details.
Now it’s done. Romano posted on X: “Juventus agree deal to sign Guglielmo Vicario from Tottenham, here we go! Spurs accept loan proposal with buy option clause – not mandatory. Vicario wanted the move and leaves #THFC today. New goalkeeper for Juventus.”
David Ornstein of The Athletic backed up the news, confirming that Tottenham have accepted Juventus’ offer. He described it as a loan with an option to buy the 29-year-old Italy international next summer, with all parties expecting the transfer to go through after Juve abandoned their Martinez chase.
For Vicario, it’s a reset and a return to familiar territory. For Juventus, it’s a calculated gamble on a goalkeeper who struggled in a chaotic Spurs side but has already proved in Serie A that he can be a reliable last line of defence.
For Tottenham, it’s another sharp cut from a season they will not want to relive. The question now is simple: who stands in goal when the next campaign kicks off in north London?
