Sam Szmodics Returns to Derby County on Loan with Obligation to Buy

Derby County have brought Sam Szmodics back to Pride Park – this time with a commitment that underlines just how much they believe he can finish the job he helped them start.

The 30-year-old forward has rejoined on a season-long loan from Ipswich Town, but the deal carries an obligation to buy at the end of the 2026-27 campaign. The trigger is appearance-based, and the eventual fee is understood to sit around £2.7m.

For Derby, it is a calculated move. For Szmodics, it feels like unfinished business.

He arrived on loan last season and made 13 Championship appearances, scoring three times as the Rams fell four points short of the play-off places. It was a brief spell, but long enough for both player and club to decide this partnership needed a second act.

The belief comes from history as much as hope. Under John Eustace at Blackburn Rovers in 2023-24, Szmodics was ruthless. He finished as the Championship’s leading scorer with 27 goals, a haul that transformed his reputation and convinced Ipswich to spend £9m to take him to Portman Road ahead of their first Premier League campaign in more than 20 years.

That move never quite caught fire. He managed four Premier League goals as the Tractor Boys went straight back down, then found the net just once in 18 appearances for Ipswich last season before Derby stepped in with a loan.

The contrast is stark: prolific and central under Eustace at Blackburn, peripheral and frustrated in Suffolk. Derby are betting that the old chemistry between manager and forward still burns.

“After being here for a couple of months, I knew what the squad and the club were all about – if I had anywhere to come back to, it was always going to be here,” he said.

The ambition is equally clear. “Hopefully, we will go one step further than we did last year and get promoted to the Premier League.”

Derby’s recruitment team have framed this as more than a short-term fix. An obligation to buy, linked to how often he plays, signals that Szmodics is expected to be central to their plans over multiple seasons, not just a one-year gamble on a familiar face.

While one attacking piece returns, another chapter in the squad quietly closes.
