Rotherham United Sign Defender Sonny Aljofree on Two-Year Deal

Rotherham United have moved to bolster their defence with the signing of Manchester United academy graduate Sonny Aljofree on a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old, comfortable both at centre-back and right-back, joins as a free agent after his release from Old Trafford in the summer. Rotherham have also built in an option to extend his stay by a further year, a clear sign they see more than short-term cover in the defender.

Aljofree arrives with a pedigree shaped in one of Europe’s most demanding academies. He was part of the Manchester United side that lifted the FA Youth Cup in the 2021-22 season, a competition that has long been a proving ground for the club’s next generation. He never broke into the first team, but his education continued away from the spotlight.

Loan spells at Altrincham, Accrington Stanley and, most recently, Notts County gave him a harder edge and a taste of senior football’s realities. Those stints, scattered across different levels and styles, now feed into a player stepping into the EFL determined to make his own name.

There is family history to live up to as well. Aljofree is the son of former Plymouth Argyle defender Hasney Aljofree, and the game has always been close. Now the younger Aljofree gets his own platform.

Rotherham have already had a close look. The defender has been on trial with the Millers throughout pre-season, training and playing his way into a contract rather than arriving on reputation alone.
