Barcelona's Roony Bardghji Suffers Torn ACL: Career Impact

Barcelona’s summer plan for Roony Bardghji has been ripped up in a single, brutal moment.

The club confirmed on Tuesday that the 20-year-old has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, an injury that will require surgery in the coming days and rule him out for months. Any prospect of a transfer before the window shuts on September 1 has vanished.

A move lined up, a career jolted

This was supposed to be the summer Bardghji moved on. After talks with Barcelona’s hierarchy, the Sweden international had been preparing for a fresh start away from the Camp Nou, aware that his path to regular minutes under Hansi Flick was narrowing fast.

Flick had been direct. According to ESPN, he told Bardghji that breaking into the first team in the upcoming season would be extremely difficult. The message was clear: look for a new club, somewhere he could play, somewhere he could grow.

Interest was there. Clubs across Europe had made contact, with the Premier League among the destinations being explored. Negotiations were expected to ramp up as the window ticked towards its final weeks.

Then came Monday’s training session.

Protected from friendlies, injured in training

Barcelona had already tried to manage the risk. Bardghji was left out of Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, a precaution to avoid injury while his future was being discussed.

The irony is cruel. He avoided the friendlies, only to suffer the worst possible injury in a routine session at the training ground.

Medical tests confirmed the severity: a complete ACL tear in his right knee. Surgery is imminent. Rehabilitation will dominate his season.

A second major blow to the same knee

For Bardghji, the emotional weight of the diagnosis will be heavy. This is not a first-time trauma. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in the same right knee, having suffered the identical injury with Copenhagen in 2024.

Barcelona brought him in last summer from the Danish club in a deal worth around €2 million, a low-risk investment in a high-upside talent. His debut season in Spain offered glimpses but not a breakthrough: 28 appearances in all competitions, two goals, and mostly minutes from the bench.

Even that limited platform was under threat. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi this summer pushed him further down the pecking order, turning a move away from Barcelona from possibility into near inevitability.

Until his knee gave way.

Window closed, season rewritten

The calendar now works against him as much as the injury. With the transfer window closing on September 1, there is no realistic scenario in which a club takes on a long-term knee rehabilitation project on a permanent deal. The door to a summer exit has slammed shut.

Bardghji will stay in Barcelona, not as a squad option fighting for minutes, but as a long-term patient. Surgery first. Then the slow, lonely grind of recovery at the training centre, while the season rolls on without him.

At 20, he now faces the second major reconstruction of the same knee and a year that was meant to relaunch his career has turned into a test of resilience. How he responds to this setback may define not just his time at Barcelona, but the trajectory of everything that comes after.
