Romelu Lukaku Set for Transfer to Fenerbahce as Napoli Finalizes Deal

Napoli are closing in on a deal to send Romelu Lukaku to Fenerbahce, a move that now looks like a matter of hours rather than days.

The Italian club initially pushed back a €6 million offer, but Fenerbahce’s improved proposal, structured with bonuses, has finally unlocked the talks, according to Gianluca Di Marzio. The numbers were never going to be spectacular; the structure was. Once the add-ons came into play, the stalemate broke.

Lukaku has already done his part. He has accepted the move, undergone medical tests, and is simply waiting for the paperwork to catch up. The two clubs are now trading documents to finalize the transfer. The Belgian will earn around €10 million per season and sign a one-year deal with an option, as reported by Mediaset.

For Napoli, this is as much about balance sheets as it is about tactics. Forty percent of the fee heading in from Fenerbahce will go straight to Chelsea, but the Italians will avoid booking a net loss on the deal. More crucially, they clear a huge salary from their wage bill, creating room and flexibility they badly needed.

This exit has been brewing for months.

Back in the spring, Lukaku’s departure felt inevitable. His decision not to return from international duty, choosing instead to continue his rehab at home ahead of the World Cup, left a mark. Inside the club, the feeling grew that a line had been crossed. The relationship never quite recovered.

Then came the twist. A coaching change, a fresh voice on the bench, and Lukaku suddenly appeared open to staying. Massimiliano Allegri, who took over the Azzurri, was prepared to keep him in the squad. On the pitch, the coach could see the value of a proven goalscorer. On the balance sheet, though, the picture was brutal. For Napoli, carrying such a high-earning deputy made little sense in a squad already leaning toward a new attacking focal point.

It’s easy to forget how decisive Lukaku once was in Naples. Two seasons ago, he was a central figure in their Scudetto run, producing 14 goals and 10 assists and bullying defenses across the league. That version of Lukaku dragged defenders around, created space for teammates, and delivered when it mattered most.

That player has been harder to find lately. A major thigh injury wrecked his most recent campaign, limiting his impact and keeping him on the treatment table for long stretches. During his absence, Napoli doubled down on Rasmus Hojlund, investing minutes, trust, and future plans in the younger forward. As Hojlund’s importance grew, Lukaku’s place shrank. The tension followed.

By the end, the situation felt unsustainable. Keeping him would have meant swallowing a huge salary for a secondary role and living with the constant risk of fresh controversy. Letting him go, even outside the top five leagues, became the cleanest solution.

So he heads to Fenerbahce, not to the glamour of England or Spain, but to a club with serious ambition and a platform that still keeps him in the European conversation. It’s not the move he might have imagined a few years ago. It is, however, a move that gives all three parties something they badly needed: clarity for Napoli, relevance for Lukaku, and a marquee name for Fenerbahce.

The next question is simple and unforgiving: can the 33-year-old who once powered a Scudetto charge still bend a season to his will on a new stage?
